Testing a Starter......step by step

some of you may have seen my starter problems, I have a new one to test now but I'm not having any luck. I'm 99% sure I'm doing it right but I would certainly appreciate a step by step to make sure I'm not having a slow day (in the head). Any advice or pictures are appreciated.

If you want to test run the starter on the floor with battery cables, hook the negative/ground lead to some substantial part of the starter housing. Hook the hot lead to the large solenoid terminal, marked +24 in the picture above. The with a small jumper wire,make a momentary

conection to the +24 terminal & the (+24) small terminal. Be prepared for the starter to jump on the floor with torque.
Might want to hold it down with your knee, or even put it in a vise.
