I will be parting out my 87 Chevy diesel van and it has a th700 tranny.

Is it possible, and if so how hard, to put that in my M1009 to get the overdrive?

Is it a good idea? bad idea? why?

Has anyone put together a howto on this conversion?

Thanks

Very doable but you will have to break down the tranny to replace the output shaft

You will also need a tcase for the 700 tranny (or at least the mounting pedestal and input shaft)

Do some searching in the CUCV forum... I did this swap almost 3 years ago now...

I did this swap too, even built the trans myself.

There are a few parts that are difficult to find. But since you already have a diesel with a 700R4, you have the hardest of them to find, the 700R4 TV cable bracket. Another hard part to find is a "tall" style transfer case adapter. It will be about 11" tall, whereas the normal ones are much, much shorter.

I would just try to find a 4x4 700R4, besides, the transmission case on the 2wd versions is quite a bit thinner than on a 4x4 "K" case.
