Just bought a M1008 a month or two ago and using it on acreage. Started getting stuck in just wet grass on mild incline. Was told that the tires I have on it are trailer tires. I want to replace the tires with mud and snow tires. The bigger the better. Question is: 1) whats the biggest tire I can put on the stock wheel. and 2) should I get a wider wheel to increase footprint/tire size? Any and all help appreciated in advance. Thanks

33x12.5x16 is as big as you can go, might have a minor fender rub every once in awhile. Mine only rub when I am turning and hit a bump. 12.5 inch's is as wide as you can go on an 8 inch rim any wider and the tire could peel off the rim. I have seen a lot of guys on here running 37's with only a 4 inch lift with no rubbing.

What Timing, I have been reading all the tire post with the 33" upper limit for diameter but found a set of "gently used" 315/75-16" BFG AT's and not being a tire expert didnt know in the "real world" if a 34.6" Dia tire would be that big of a difference? I also searched 315 in various ways and dont find any reference to this size here. So I want to stay stock but considered the off road designs 1" zero-ratye block for the front
What do you guys think?

M1008's originally came with 235/85's, I'm pushing it with 265/75's on mine (supposed to be at least 7" width wheel, so M1008 stock wheels are 1/2" narrower than recommended minimum). Some people will run 285's on a stock 6.5' wheel, but I wouldn't do it . They will physically mount on the stock wheel but you will have a ridiculous amount of sidewall bulge and they won't wear right. If you want to run 285's or 305's, start looking for a set of 8" wide wheels.

If you don't mind running 16.5's, talk to the humvee tire guys for wheel recommendations.

I almost pulled the trigger on the hummer radials then learned I would have to do the 4" lift. I am alright with doing the lift if it were free. I don't know the cost but someone quoted me $1500. Not. In. The. Budget.

I found some wheels on eBay but they are the 6.5" width. The local tire store said I need the 8" instead. I am not sure I trust the guys knowledge base. He tried to sell me spoked wheels and 265 75r 16s for $1K. I might have bought the bullet on this but wanted to put it up for discussion here.

By the way, I'm not too interested in doing a lot of fender removal, if that helps anyone make up my mind for me.

I am not sure I would do it, but I find the idea of LineX on the entire truck intriguing. Any thoughts? The stuff seems to really reinforce the body. Would have to do one straight color (black or OD green)

I am running the 33x12.5x15s. I had a very slight fender rub.I fixed it with a pair of pliers.The rub only happened when making sharp turns on the very inside of the fender well.I bent the metal back maybe 1/2 an inch,no more rub.

I had 285/75/16 tires on my stock rims with no lift. That is the biggest tire I would recommend.

I eventually went to a 4" lift and 37" tires, for the engine speed reduction at speed.


Some of the info posted above, is incorrect.

I am in the process of building mine right now. I got the tires and wheels, 37'' goodyear hum. tires and wheels. Going to just wait till the funds are right to get the lift together and for my foot/leg to be out of the cast. In my world, I would rather wait and do exactly what I want and do it right the first time than be bitter later because I didnt. Good looking truck BTW!!! Welcome to SS

That qupte for a lift is for all brand new components. it can be done much cheaper with used parts

Do some research many many many people do this

I'm running 285 75 16's on stock rims. Only rubbing was against the drag-link which i fixed by installing/adjusting a longer steering stop bolt in. Tires were Pro comps which wore evenly. Tires were cheap (now 3 yrs old) and fairly aggressive, but are pretty much done. Wanted to put new ones on last mid-winter but didn't have the 1K to put the ten plys i've decided on.... Truck will have new shoes by the time the snow flies!

Would love to go bigger on the tires but seeing as how this is my plow/work truck a lift is out of the question. Wider rims are somewhat pricey, plus rim weight capacity is a issue. Besides, my truck was converted to SBC which is a little more tolerant rpm wise...

Find a small independent shop to mount the tires.....

Many of you have probably heard of trail worthy fab. They are referrenced on here pretty often. I spoke to them late this afternoon. He tells me I can do a 37" tall tire with a 9 inch wide wheel. No lift necessary. They are hummer wheels and tires but he said I would have to grind down some of my front fenders on the aft sides. He apparently runs into this fairly routinely. He said they would actually make the wheels and do everything so other than the fender modification all I would have to do is put them on. $300/wheel. They are hummer take offs thy he states are >80% tread. I can drive there in 3 or 4 hr's so no shipping.

The only other possible problem would be if I needed to change my gear ratio. My CUCV has a nv4500 tranny put in by the last owner. He seems to think I won't need to do anything but a possible axle change would restore my towing power if the larger wheels proved to be a problem.

Man, all I wanted was a new set of tires. This has become way too complicated. :cookoo::cookoo:

I think you've an awesome set-up for running 37" tires. If you really needed to tow in 4th, you've only lowered yourself to the rest of the crowd. The 4.56 gears are deep. I've never personally lifted a K20/K30 but I do have a decent grasp of what this generation Chevy needs for a given tire size and 4" of lift sounds right. A spring front/block rear lift will cut the cost and won't matter unless you want to rock-crawl.

So Timber, you are saying I will need the lift? Also, since I can do 75mph without too much trouble, the guy from trailworthy fab seemed to think my ratio was closer to 3.75(I think that's what he said). Thanks for the complement. Not sure I really understand it, but thanks in spite of my ignorance.

Yeah, you really need the lift. The "ear tach" doesn't work so well with a diesel until you have them wound out. You can pull the cover on the diff and get the numbers off the ring gear to find out for sure what gear ratio you have.
