Top speed of M35A3?

Got a wonderful M35A3 with under 4kmi on it. Gotta fix front end shimmy but that shouldn't be a big problem (unless you all know something I don't, which is almost comically likely).

But the thing doesn't want to go over 50mph at 2700 rpm. I think top is 2750. Have checked speed with a GPS gizmo and in fact it's doing about 48-49.

Brakes aren't engaged.

First issue is a stupid question: What is the top end for a 35A3?

If higher, what could be holding it back.

Will check out the tranny to see if I'm light on fluid but I doubt it.

Am not used to the shift points yet. Seems to take a long time and high RPMs to shift to 2d, then 3d and 4th shift soon and smoothly.

Thanks for your feedback.

Duh, good idea. I'll check when I get back home later this week.

Funny I couldn't find a speed limit in the -10 manual. They only forbid exceeding 2700 RPM.

We got into this discussion a while back. I think the auto in a A3 is 1:1 in high gear. A A2 will outrun a A3 (well maybe not on hills  ).

That's amazing. 40 or so more horsepower yet it's made to run 7 mph slower. Seems an odd balance of engine/tranny.

And I don't like drving at 2700 rpm. Figured it though. Checked the dash plates and it reflected upper limit for shifting to low range 4th gear as 25 mph. Seems to me that limit is normally 50% of top end. Still haven't found it in the manual.

Guess I'll use it for running errands around town. Do't know if the governor keeps the truck from overreving.

Bummer on the top speed, Mark. Does your CTIS work? I have seen a few that worked, more that didn't, and even more that had it disabled.

Haven't tried the CTIS. Turned it on in the hopes that shimmy up front and low spead could be improved. Looks like I need to replace the front two tires, but two new ones came with the truck so I'm fine there.

I was afraid that the tranny was full of rabbit pellets or something. At least the things normal for the A3 so I don't have to contemplate a tranny rebuild. And 45 is min on the Interstates... Will get a lot of irritated looks but no tickets.

I'll use my A2s for most hauling etc. The A3 is for picking up girls.

Even though it is slower than your A2's, it is still a very cool truck. I'm sure the chicks will dig it. You could always put an auxiliary over-drive unit behind the tranny. You'd have to lengthen and shorten some drive-shafts, but it would do wonders for your top-end speed.

[thumbzup] FINALLY!!!!! There's something my 1971 Kaiser Jeep M35A2 can OUTRUN!!!!!! AT least, on the level!!!! [thumbzup] [thumbzup] [thumbzup] WHO HOOOO!!!!
I guess the guys at GL didn't tell you that the top end on the M35A series runs normally about 53-56 MPH, but that the manuals generally state road speed at 48???? And most trucks (Mine included) usually carruied a SOP stencil somewhere in the cab for 25MPH on Post- 45 MPH maximum speed...... They ain't rockets, ain't likely gonna be rockets (unless you fit yours with a JATO), the beasts were intended as off road trucks ( most like quarry, logging and construction trucks).
They will, however, serve as magnificent chick magnets..... If the chick's not too much into looks, speed or ride (often applicable to the truck owners, I hear.....), it's kinda the uber machismo truck for off roading and mall crawling.... makes all the other trucks look like underperformers (their owners, also). If the M35A3 has a governor, it's much improved over the M35A2, mine seems to be the bolt through the floorboard under the accellerator pedal.... Remember, keep smiling..... they'll wonder what subversive move you're up to next (ditto for the chicks)!!!!

Sincerely,
Kyle F. McGrogan
