When I move the shifter handle left to the reverse and 1st gear positions, I can feel a spring trying to re-center the shifter back. However, when I move the shifter to the right to the 4th and 5th gear positions, I don't feel any resistance from a spring. I'm guessing that spring broke or is otherwise not in place, but I wanted to confirm that there's supposed to be a spring there before I go digging in the transmission.

Probably to remind you that reverse is on the right side so you don't throw it in reverse while down shifting. is my guess

The spring is helpful. If the stick hits the spring, I'm sure it's out of gear.

Yep, I bounce the shifter to make sure it's in neutral.
