LEESBURG – Five vintage military aircraft, including the only B-29 Superfortress still flying, will make an appearance at Leesburg International Airport March 7-9.
The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) AirPower History Tour includes not only the B-29 Superfortress, dubbed “FIFI,” but a C-45 Expeditor, T-6 Texan, PT-13 Stearman and a T-34 Mentor. Visitors will be able to see the aircraft up close, watch them fly and also purchase rides, according to a press release from the CAF.
The B-29, first flown in 1942, began active service in 1944 and is perhaps best known as the aircraft whose missions over Japan helped bring about the end of World War II, according to the CAF. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, with longer range and greater bomb loads.
The B-29 also was used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s.
The AirPower History Tour is visiting eight cities in Alabama and Florida this spring. The tour brings aircraft, pilots and crews from over 70 CAF units located throughout the country together to create an ever changing assortment of touring military aircraft.
“These aircraft are powerful history lessons bringing the sights, smells and sounds of World War II aviation history to audiences across the United States,” CAF Public Information Officer Kim Pardon said in the release.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 11 through 17. Children ages 10 and under are free.
The airplanes will be on static display when they are not flying. Ride prices range from $75 to $1,595. Advance ride reservations can be made and additional information about the tour stop can be found at www.AirPowerTour.org.
The aircraft will be on display at SunAir Aviation, 8806 Airport Blvd., from 2 to 5 p.m. on March 7, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 8 and 9.
