Who has reused a MEP generator engine for other equipement?

Any of you reuse your engines for log splitters, irrigation pumps, snow blowers, etc.?

We were splitting wood this fall and an older gentleman showed up with a Continental Y69 4cyl powered log splitter. That thing was so much quieter and nicer than the other 3600 rpm box store splitters. It got me thinking about the spare diesel I had sitting around in the garage.

I think the main issue would be connection the engine to the accessory. From what I have been told these have a unique flywheel arrangement. I have a 23 horse Kubota engine I would like to put in something. A bit overkill for my log splitter though. I actually thought about using the Kubota on my 003.

When you have a welder, anything is what you want it to be.

I have a spare Yanmar engine for an 831A that I wanted to use on a wood splitter. I also had a spare stator since I converted one of my 831A's to a non inverter generator head using Kurt's conversion. The Yanmar has a tapered shaft so I stripped the tapered sleeve from the stator and turned it down to fit a Lovejoy coupling to connect a hydraulic pump.

I built a trailer mounted log splitter from an 002. Pretty much removed the gen head and put the pump and tank in that space. I put a dual stage pump in the 21 GPM area if I recall and a 5" x 24" piston.
It just idles and has plenty of power to split anything, only issue is the pump is rated at 21 GPM at 3000 rpm, so at low RPM the piston is very very slow.
I would like to build in some kind of gear drive to double the input speed to boost up the flow to where it needs to be.

My son also stuck a DN2M into a John Deere 425 garden tractor. All we needed to do for both projects was to make some simple adapters. Just needed the milling machine and I was good to go.

You could use the pump to charge an accumulator instead of direct off the pump

I'd suggest two pulleys and a V-belt that would offer some shock absorption, though they make some close coupled chain systems for double the speed.

I get the idea of using what you have, but if you do not need a low speed diesel, there are a fair few alternative engines in the small engine category. It would just seem to me that the Lister engine is worth more as a spare for one of these generators than for, say, a mulcher that could be run by a couple hundred dollar Harbor Freight engine, or a used Jetta engine.🤷‍♂️

I've thought of all sorts of possibilities from belts to gears to planetary type drives, almost did an outer "ring" gear with the teeth internal and a "pinion gear on the pump, then just offset the pump to the side to mesh the gears. These are straight helical gears, not like a automotive ring and pinion.
My 2 restraints are that I currently have almost no additional room to move the pump away from the motor, it's only about 1/2" away from the hydraulic tank.
My other concern is not knowing how much side load the pump shaft can handle. I don't think the pump is meant to see much side load, so then a double chain coupler may be a better choice. I also thought of doubling the size of the pump, but not looking to toss another $500 at it. So I've just left it as-is....

I suppose I should add that this was done more as a teaching project with my son and is by no means "practical" it was more for the cool factor of a diesel running at 1000 RPM instead of my previous 3600 gas screamer.
The generator is mounted on the front of a PU-978 power plant trailer with the beam and piston assembly bolted at the back.
It's got a log lifter ( piston mount aligned perfectly with where a factory lift hook was bolted to the rear of the trailer ) and a table surrounding the wedge / work area. So as you can imagine it's not exactly small.
I had a home made 2 piece unit that was powered by a 9hp gas ground blower converted to hydraulic power unit connected with 10' hoses and quick connects and the beam and piston were on a trailer axle with a coupler so I could tow it around, but that was lacking too much in the cool factor category.... ;)

Sounds like a fantastic teaching project!
