Wide Load Movements

What kind of signage/flags does the Army use when moving wide loads in CONUS? Is it the same as commercial? Anyone got any pics?

same ones, I see em alot at the local armory,and have some wide load signs from there, same ones... although depending on the commanders, most of the time anything big is moved in Nj, they hire it out to a commercial big rig carrier, Randy

Thanks for the input. A lot of MVs are overwidth in stock form (M123, M911, M172, M747, etc.). I believe CONUS regs are to notify the appropriate state(s) in advance, but that seems like a lot of paperwork. If moving one of those items, I just want to look somewhat official so as to not raise any questions. Does the Army use any kind of pilot car in the front/rear (other than charlie charlie)?

Hi M1075, I am not 100% sure these days, but when I was trucking, anything under 9 ft. did not need escort unless Overlength. I am trying to get a M172 and they are 9ft, and I am hoping to get it home on my 1ton Chevy. I can do it if no load on it. Good luck. Phil

Wow, that sounds like a load for a 1 ton. Do you have a 5th wheel hitch or plan to haul it on another trailer? It is going to look really wide behind a pickup!

when i was trucking ,over 9feet needed wide load signs only ,no escort,under 12 feet wide, rear escort, and over 12 feet wide, front and rear escort.only for leagal 13 6 high loads. :driver:

:grd: The only problem I have is the fact that it will look Big behind a 1ton! I will have a Fifth wheel bolted to me flat bed through to the frame. I presently pull a car trl I built 9ft wide, and haven't had problems. I have been as far as Ohio with no problems. I just want to buy a Low Bed and transport it home without goint too far with my bigger trucks. As long as I am empty, I am Legal!!??? :?:

What about trailer brakes? I think a M172 is really going to look suspicious behind a 1 ton and it might peak deputy dawg's interest.

Does anyone know if these are current regulations/standards? I'm sure it could vary by state too.

In North Carolina, the military units that have been transporting extra-dimensional loads have been following the provisions in the State's regulations with the exception of spacing of vehicles (military does convoy while civilian extra-dimensional is not allowed to do so).

I think that it is a pretty rare day when an active duty MV is stopped in the state... :) But, given how well the Troopers seem to be able to tell the difference between an active duty MV and a privately owned MV, I'd err on the side of caution and do it by the book. Especially if you had a problem and somebody's lawyers or insurance company got involved...
