My first winch, it works fine but the brake assembly is a mess, OK how does the brake work, what problems could I have if the brake was not working? When does it engage?

Did you read the winch TM yet? The brake on the pinion is to prevent the winch from moving under load unless you want it to.

My 1952 winch was a mess. The band and drum were basically rusted together. I didn't and haven't found a source for them, so I just left them off and haven't had a bit of trouble.
