Yesterday we were working with the wrecker trying to reinstall a box with cage on a M35 Cdn, we tried to lower the stabilzer legs on the rear of the truck. Dvrs side no problem, passenger side jammed tight we could not extend the leg, we tried everything until finally we used the cable on the boom arm to pull on it.
We assumed that dirt, crap etc had jammed the inside so we removed the driver's side leg, using scrappers we removed the crud and pressure washed the area.
It still would not fit, we looked at the leg extension it was ok and we looked inside the tubular housing wit a light we couldn't see anything. We was frustrated, finally we got a powerful light and looked at the inside again and there in the middle was a dent. Now, this is 1/4 in steel.
What happened was the connector between the steel cable and the chain had been pulled tight and had been forced into the small opening causing the dent. This probably happened when someone engaged the rear winch and pulled on the cable causing the couple to jam and make a dent.
We now had 2 options #1 removed all the winch parts, cut the dent away and then reweld a new piece on the sleeve, this was a monster of a job.
Option #2 Cut about 6 inches from the top of the stabilizer leg where the dent and the leg met. We took option #2, it was the easiest and once we cut the piece everything worked find.
The moral of this adventure RTFI (Read the f__king instructions) before you play with your new toys. Slap the fingers.
