Another Transmission swap question

I bought a 91 Chev half ton 2wd pickup for the banks turbo on the 6.2. It has the 700r4 in it with low miles, but the 6.2 is seized because it blew an oil line. Is it worth it to save the transmission for my M1009? What would I need to do or parts to find to bolt it to a 208 or a 205 transfer case? Thanks

Ylou would need to change the input shaft to make it work wth a 4wd advance adapters sells the parts you needAnd its only 27 spline. So you need a 208 from a half ton truck with a 27 spline passenger side drop. Or talk ta
advance adapters for the right spline tail housing and adater.

Will have too completely disassemble the 700r4 and install a 4x4 out put shaft. an NP208 from a turbo 350 will bolt right up to the 700r4 and will be able to use your current drive shafts, or an NP241 from a k-5 blazer 1989-91 will also work just the same, the NP241 is a little beefer than the NP208. If you want a NP205 you will need to find one from off the back of a turbo 350, usually 1973-79 were the only years they offered the np205 behind the turbo 350. You will then need a 2 inch spacer to go between the np205 adapter and transmission, I have a company that I use for this part, if you want it pm me. will also need too change the rear drive shaft to a slip instead of a yoke slip joint. Also the trans cross-member will need to be moved back 2 inch's.

So if you use a NP208 or NP241 from off a turbo 350 everything will bolt right back together no changes necessary, if you use the NP205 read above. I'm doing the NP205 -700r4 conversion for a friend's cucv right now will post pics soon.

Folks, be careful with your 350/205 purchases. 73 was the last year that combo was popular. In 74 GM made all of the V8 4x4 trucks with automatics full time 4x4 and as such has the 203. I've seen more than a couple of offerings on CL saying 205 but the pics showed a 203. SM465 equipped trucks and 6 cylinder equiped trucks still had the 205. Of course the SM465 trucks had the 10 spline output where the 350 had the fine spline (teeth number escapes me now).

That 91 with the pooped 6.2 is a treasure trove of good parts. Lots of Win there for sure. Oh, don't forget. Even if you decide against it, I would snag the tranny for resale. Especially important is the TV linkage on the engine. 6.2 specific and lots of folks shopping for it right now.

Thanks for the help and pointers. I guess I'll keep the 700r4 for now and look for parts. I haven't had a 700r4 apart. Is replacing the output shaft something a shop should perform? Special tools etc? Besides the output shaft is there anything else I need? Thanks.

Somehow I got a double post. In looking for another TC would it be correct to assume that the linkage for the 208 I have now with the TH400 would also work with a 208 and 700r4 combo? I'm thinking that keeping a 208 TC in there will keep things simpler. Thanks

Yes the linkage for the np208-turbo 400 will work with the np208-700r4 combo, the 700r4 is actually shorter than the turbo 400 but the adapter and np208 from a turbo 350 will make up the difference, won't have to move the cross-member nor change the shifter for the np208 and will be able too use your current driveshaft's.

Yes there are a few special tools needed to tear down and put the 700r4 back together. Its not hard to do after the first time, it took me all day too tear my first one completely apart and several days to put back together, I have only done 1 but now that I have done it, won't take very long the second time. So if your not sure about doing it than definitely take it to a trans shop.

the NP208 from a turbo 400 is identical to a NP208 from a turbo 350 except the input shaft is a 27spline for the turbo 350 and 700r4 instead of a 32 spline for the turbo 400.

Another way to use a 2wd trans in your truck would be to hook it to a dodge divorced np205. Then you won't have to pay a shop to dissassemble your 700r4 and you will get a crazy strong t-case as well. Look on ebay. there is usually one or two divorced np205's up for sale on there cheaper than what a shop will probly charge you to tear apart your trans and change the output shaft.
