Inflated a 9.00x20 NDT to 110 PSI Today

I almost soiled myself today. Earlier this afternoon I was outside sandblasting the rims of a couple used but good condition tires I had bought from a guy up near the old Loring AFB. For the sandblasting I had set the regulator on the air compressor to 110 PSI.

After the blasting was done I wanted to see if the tires would hold air over night so I pointed the rings in a safe direction and clipped on a tire chuck line with an in-line regulator. The first tire filled up quickly as it already had plenty of pressure already in it, but second one was taking longer so I set the inline regulator to 50PSI and set it and forget it....for a couple hours. When I came back to put my tools away for the night that's when I noticed the inline regulator was reading 110PSI!

Upon seeing the regulator gauge needle that far to the right I instantly ducked for cover. Luckily the tires were sitting on a trailer bed so I could get out of the direct blast path should the tire rupture. I then proceeded to gingerly disconnect the inline regulator from the hose and bleed the excess pressure out down to 50PSI. WHEW!!!! Not going to trust a inline regulator ever again, that'll learn me!

Wow. I would have had the same reaction. A lot of damage could have been done. I think it's a good idea to never leave a tire unattended while filling it with air.

I'll bet it looked like an 11.00x20 with that much air.

You might consider only using that tire on the rear. It may have permanent damage, even though it did not blow apart.

i always watch it when filling and i will never use digital gauge again i was filling a tire and checking with gauge tire was supposed to have 85 psi but seemed to take long time getting there so grabed other gauge and had 105 psi in tire but digital said 75

Yeah, 50PSI make me nervous too that's why I had been using regulators which allowed me to walk a safe distance away from it. I had intended to use this tire as a spare but maybe the rear is the best place for it, I'll monitor the tire's life and report back to this thread. I may need to replace the tube on it anyway because the valve stem is bent about 80 degrees, I'm really surprised it didn't leak out at there.

The over-inflated tire girth does appear to have swollen a little at 50psi. I'd estimate its tread is 70% and its now about 1/4 of an inch larger from the tread rib-to-rib than the other tire which has a tread of 100%. Both tires are Good Years, the over-inflated tire rim was welded vs the other which is riveted if that makes a difference.

I always put a chain or three through the rime to contain the split ring in the worst case. Or else use a tire cage.

I had some genius kid at work stick a clip on chuck on a tractor tire and then went to lunch after getting lost in a text message. Our shop compressor is set at 130, and the ensuing blast not only ruined a $1500 tire, but also cleared out an entire work stall like a bomb. Lucky for him he didn't kill anyone and didn't even get fired!

When he came back from lunch a bunch of us were standing around waiting to see his reaction. He walked in texting, saw the chuck on the floor and reinstalled it, never noticing the carnage and proceeded to the timeclock. I pushed to get him some time off and get phone use stopped but the management is too soft.

Yes, on company time. Total BS but management has no balls. We have 2 guys barely 20 years old that text all the time and are a few minutes late every day. I would have canned both of them a long time ago but not my call.

PHONE, that way I still got work out of them, after fighting texting for a hour, I usually would give a choice, give me the phone or get off location, I did not understand "you can not do that"
