One reason i was thinking of using the 14 bolt i have is that it is eight lug. So the same rim that fits my M101A3 would also fit the truck or the otherway. Also i thimk the 3/4 ton axels would handle the 37 inc tires better. I do like to play around off road.

101A3 has hmmwv rims right?

Seems like alot of work just to have a little bit larger axle shaft in the rear. You will still have C-clips in the rear and the front will be the EXACT same strength when it comes to turning 37's.

14SF is a LOT beefier than a 10 bolt 28 spline. Not a 14FF but good for 37's if he's not going to hammer on it.

Also he'd have to regear his front axle to match whatever gear ratio he ends up with so might as well find a 3/4 ton D44 or 10 bolt and have 8 lugs and lower gears at once.

Yea but why not run the six lug version????????? Wheels wont interchange between his trailer and truck anyway. I guess I just dont see the reason for axing ever being able to run 15in tires again. There much cheaper and much more availible.

6 lug version would make sense if he had a 6 lug front axle that already had low gears in it like 3.73's, 4.10's, 4.56's, etc to work with those 37's.

Since he doesn't, and his 14SF probably already does...and he owns it already...he's money ahead by just finding a matching 8 lug 10 bolt or D44 front.

15" tires are a dying breed. Especially in the newer tire designs. Lots don't even have tires bigger than 33's in 15" sizes.

To each there own but I would figure a gearset , set of used axle shafts and some brake hardware would be cheaper than another front axle asembly, wheels and tires. I wish 15's where extinct, there all you can find around here.

Thats what i was thinking sence the axel is just sitting there and i have a bunch of 16 inch rims also, just need to find a dana 44 or 10 bolt front axel and a locker for the 14 bolt cheep. Plus the 14 bolt has a little better gear ratio.

Not exactly sure where you're coming up with the axleshafts and brake hardware but still, not everyone can regear an axle or wants to. Last I knew the average to regear an axle was over $500. I'm lucky and know a couple guys who will do it for around $100-150 if I provide the parts.

Besides, if he haunts the various local and national forums he can probably come up with most parts. I got four nice 16" rims for $200 a few years ago. Won't go back to 15's for anything. Like my Load Range D and E tires.

Doesn't work that way. 88-98 body style 6 lug axleshafts (while not common to begin with) aren't the same length as 80-87 body style 14SF 8 lug shafts. They don't swap right over.

Guy on CK5 tried to do that and ended up spending more than just finding a 6 lug 14SF and moving the perches and mounts would have cost him.

Good to know, I know the 10 bolts where that way and the 2-4 wheel drive didnt interchange. I have a bunch of the 9.5 6 lugs so i never tried swaping.

Still requires either custom shafts, new parts, or adapting various pieces together.

Go over to ColoradoK5 and look for a guy named Chevy305's build thread. He pretty much says he wasted his money and time converting his 80's 8 lug 14SF to 6 lug due to all the problems he had.

At any rate, the OP here already has a perfectly good 14SF to use.
