I've been offered 2 cargo covers, differences being one is "rubberized" camo pattern and the other is canvas olive drab. Is one better than the other, which one should I go for?

Depends on the look you want for your truck, canvas for Vietnam/Early Cold War era, or later conflict eras with the vinyl. If you garage the truck, the canvas would be OK, un-garaged the canvas won't last as long. Is the canvas new?

They are both used covers, but he's charging 300 for vinyl and 200 for canvas. I dont know if thats a good deal or not.

How many holes are in both? if you dont care about "period correct", the vinyl ones are much better than the canvas as far as durability IF it is not too far gone already.

Canvas has two problems......... it's heavy and it stinks to high heaven.....moisture is not it's friend either.

It is also coarse and will rub the hide off of you when trying to roll it up or fold it.

I would opt for vinyl myself.

The smell takes me back. I just bought a canvas cover for my ride and for now it will be outside kept. Besides not leaving it on all winter is there anything I can do to protect the canvas?

Don't leave it on in the summer either! Really, the last canvas stuff was probably made over 20 years ago, maybe a lot longer. Sunlight (think UV rays) is going to have a negative effect on it, as will rain and wind. Same is true of vinyl, but at least most of it is newer. I've puirchased UV treated tarps to go over my vinyl stuff that's stored outside (MKT's and Generator trailers). $40 each is cheap protection to save the GI stuff that soon will no longer be available.2cents

Thanks for the heads up. That's what I was afraid of. It's just a battle of time with these old tarps. I guess the best idea for an outside truck would be to buy a cheap wal-mart tarp to protect the truck bed etc.

From another thread:

I have a NOS canvas top I got from Saturn Surplus about 4-5 years ago. It stayed in the house for the first year and a half and and then sat in the garage a couple years before I put it on and put it in the weather. its been on the
the truck a little over a year and its falling apart. I would buy new if you want canvas and treat it with something quarterly to make it last. Another lesson learned the hard way. I prefer the look of canvas so I will probably do it again. I'm just going to treat it better than the last one and cover it with Jluv1185's old poly to keep the sun off. Mine was $325 at the time I bought it.
After having deuces now for almost 5 years, I would definitely recommend to anyone that they invest in a cheap aluminum carport if they do not have a garage they can keep the vehicle in. The issues of tire dry rot, cab and cargo bed cover fatigue are great enough to justify the $5-700 investment.

Great idea. Thanks I just got the tarp via UPS today I will try that old poly treatment as well. Do you know where I can find it or something like it.

Speaking of canvas in the sun... How do deuce winter fronts hold up to sitting in the weather all winter? I put mine on when I first need it in the fall and leave it on until spring. Will the sunlight hurt it? Should I cover it up with a tarp when parked?

I just bought a nos canvas cargo top for $225. Guy said he had 5 vinyl ones for $300ea so I went up and looked at them turned out all 5 of them were for 5 tons, he also had two deuce canvas ones so I settled for one of those. The canvas one I bought is a later production being it has the black poly tie down ropes. I keep my deuce in the barn anyway and the canvas makes the barn smell real nice and being I have stars on my deuce it ( canvas ) is more period correct.
