Hey SS,

I am buying a spare starter to keep in the Oh9. Some of you have recommended DB Electrical on EBAY. there 24v Gear Reduction is 90 bucks right now. Says it's new. Is this the good one, or Chinese Junk? Or should I spend $200 from CNC Electrical?

Sorry Dave, I'm no help on this one... I've been lurking here too... looking for a good 12v unit for when i undertake the 12v conversion prior to putting in my Air Cond system...

The DB is Chinese. For $90, its decent. I have one, the solenoid stuck after about 3 months, after I had a new solenoid put on it it worked for 9 more until I took it off still working and replaced it with a Delco one. I still carry it as a spare.

I got one off ebay for 90$ shipped. It was still in the plastic and was a Delco. Gotta have the gear reduction bracket, I got mine from the Chevy dealership for 15$. It spins way faster and is one of my favorite bolt on mods. I kept the direct drive as a backup just in case though... hard to pull start an automatic 100 miles in the middle of nowhere

Yep- they are made by 10 year old chinese kids.

I just posted a thread on this last week someone suggested a wilson starter. 28mt Made in canada or US i can't remember. Your best bet is another oem one rebuilt. Which is what i am trying to find.

I have had zero problems with this starter. They are new and have a two year warranty. Well worth the money IMHO.

Both.

One thing to consider, most of the 24v gear reductions starters for sale today are made in China. There have been mixed reviews on the dependablity of the units.

I had used the GR 24v DB Electric starter before. It worked great but I got rid of the truck not long after so dont know how long they last.

I got the GR bracket from GM-parts direct

I now have an original starter i need to rebuild to keep as a spare.

I bought one and installed it this afternoon. It works, but I'll admit I was holding my breath there for a second. I got lucky with the new support bracket, my local dealership had one left. The starter seems like it weighs half as much as the original direct drive starter, worth the upgrade for that alone. It had a little casting flash around the mounting surface but a few passes with a flat file had it ready to go.

I have threads and threads regarding these. For the money, I could not resist. I bought one off the bay from Caltric. It is a chinese middleman from LA area. When I told them the solenoid was likely bad, they said to simply return it on a 1 year warranty. I asked if we could avoid all the heavy shipping costs round trip and if he would just send me a replacement solenoid. He did.

I though it was giving me problems a few months later and ordered a Wilson. It came; but I think they sent the 12Volt unit by mistake. I put the chinese unit back in while I waited for a 24volt Wilson. The Chinese unit is still cranking; but at least I have the Wilson on the shelf in case the Caltric goes. I pack the spare when I venture afar.

I'd get a Caltric off ebay; but I would have a shop rebuild your old core. Shelve it along with the correct bracket.
