having trouble with starting my 1009. at first it was the glow plugs wouldnt come on unless i tried to start it first then on the second try the light came on and it would start up. so i have been looking for the glow plug card. 82abnmp sent me a replacement card. i found 2 cards in this truck. one is smaller than the one he sent and one is even smaller. didnt find anything that was big enough to hide a card that size. this is a 1986 yr truck maybe that makes a difference. here is a pic of the two cards side by side. i didnt take a pic of the really small one. that one is about 2 x 3 inches and its by the ebrake housing. so i am asking for any info on my set up or maybe someone has a 86 and can help me out.

The large one is the glowplug controler. There is a mounting bracket at the base of the steering column. Most are just hanging or ziptied. About te size of a cigarette package.

Medium is the Tach Buffer card, box is next to the diagnostic port. There is a second card for the Resistor Board. It is also next to the diagnostic port. Diagram E-11

Small is the low coolant card. Located next to the e-brake/fusebox

Use the TM 9-2320-289-20 tech manual to test the GP system. Chapter 2, Electrical Troubleshooting, paragraph 15, page 2-62

GP Card

Thanks Joe

Tim, that card should work, it was working good when I took it out of my truck.

Keep me posted.

ok a real big update. i do not have a card in this truck. right now the glow plugs are not coming on but all the time that i have had this truck they were working. my wires under the dash that use to go to the card are connected together. it came that way from the navy seebee yard in gulfport. and here are some pics of the wires and my odd looking dual relays under the hood.

Ouch! I've seen complete GP system harnesses on one of those auction sites recently. There are probably members here that have, or can get, them in the classifieds section.

There are plenty of posts on how to do the GP push button conversion / adaptation. Your situation should be much simpler, just needing to wire the button to control the GP relay.

As for why you'd want to add the GP controller stuff, its all personal preference / choice. Mine works, and I'm happy to leave it alone. I just thought that since you acquired the controller that you were trying to restore the system to stock.

i see many guys that have had trouble with that system. i am thinking that at least the navy came up with another solution to the card. look at the relays it has many wires coming in and out. maybe that is where a new type card is

it looks like a civi 6.2 glow plug relay to me from the blurry pic!!!
That is what I think I am seeing. It looks like the system has been modified to accept a civilian controller.

On the downside, it cannot do everything the military one can do, but it is not near as damaging to the engine as the manual button.

On the upside, if you need to replace the controller, they are pretty easy to get.

Yes it is a civvy controller. Here is a pic of the controller on a 1988 Seabee truck that I picked up from Gulfport also. Maybe that is all they had in the warehouse...

The controller elcetronics are inside the plactic housing. They are suppost to be sealed. Really no troubleshooting just replacement. Here is a Service Bulletin from GM for the Civvy controller that may help a little.
