One of the requirements is that the vehicle has to be able to move under its own power to go by RORO.

Sorry for all the questions, I was thinking about getting a Ferret shipped and was just wondering how they would drive it on and off if they dont know the startup and driving procedure. Same for FV432, its not like a standard car or truck you just start up and drive.

One thing, they MUST be steam cleaned and have NO DIRT AT ALL on them! Otherwise the FDA will make you pay for steam cleaning at this end by an "approved" company at your sometimes great expense.

He is correct. I have had to pay through the nose to get shipments of tractors steamed. When I started importing equipment, I thought that Customs was going to be a pain. After talking to the agents, I learned a lot. I was told that Customs would never be my hold up, and that was true. They never held up one of my shipments. The docks and warehouses are their responsibility. They want you to get your stuff. If it is legal, they will see that you get it. If it has to sit there, it is in their way.

The other agencies are not that hospitable. The Agriculture department was a pain. They do not do their inspections throughout the month and show up on the last day needing to look like they have worked that month. Therefore they would place Ag holds on all kinds of things, often without even inspecting the container. They did once inspected a container of tractors and took them all out. There were 16 tractors packed in the container. Once they had them out, they were unable to get them packed back in. They just sent the partial container on without saying a word. Took a day to find out where my other tractors were. Then I had to get them at my expense. I was not a happy camper that day.

They frequently move heavy equipment by RORO --- all kinds of tracked vehicles, cranes, tractors, big trucks, you name it. So, it is possible. You could always have the seller/shipper post some written instructions in the vehicle if you think it would help.

The startup and driving procedure in the manual is only like 3 pages, I was thinking of maybe putting that on the turret or interior.

I know this sounds like a silly question but on the steam clean issue it is outside only correct? Also do the RORO shippers handle this (at your request) or it has to be done before handing off to them?

They will require you to steam clean or fumigate the entire piece of equipment if they find any dirt or signs of insects, inside or out. They are worried about bringing in pests or fungus or some sort of plant disease.

From my experience, they are only worried about it when it is time for their quotas to be met.

The longshoreman are there to load and unload cargo, not to clean vehicles. The vehicles have to be clean when they are brought to port. Mine was not steam cleaned, but there were absolutely no visible chunks of dirt and crud.

Here's a link to a 2 minute video showing some of the big equipment shipped via RORO

Start-up instructions for a Ferret are less complex than a 432, Stalwart or Saladin, and we have had all moved via RORO using such. These people move all kinds of equipment everyday. They know what they are doing. But I would never move anything without a CONEX unless I had to. A Ferret in a CONEX is not that much more money and you can stuff it with spares and accessories; easily enough to sell extras and pay for the entire shipment. Extra engines, gearboxes, periscopes, CES, Sand Channels, etc always bring good money on Ferrets. On a RORO, you always run the risk of shipping damage and/or pilfering.

The price for container came back pretty reasonably, does the steam clean issue still apply when the stuff is in a container? I was going to pile a few things in the container for shipment back.

It is only an issue if they inspect, my Scorpion and my wife's Fox were not inspected at all, even 2 months after Sept 11 2001. We MAY have been given some special treatment, our Form 6's were overnighted to us by the ATF. Myself and 2 corporations had sued the ATF to end the hold caused by a memo from the Clinton Administration. Then again they may not open that many containers with armor in them, I dunno.

Rgr, getting more comfortable with all the issues thanks for the help. Im now seeing if the Ferret is tax as a truck or an auto and making sure the gas guzzler tax doesnt apply, based on my research the answers are Auto and it doesnt.

Next up is learning the export license application.

There is an Tariff schedule that WAS in place that related to armor and their parts. It had a tariff of ZERO. I cannot tell you the number as I'm away from my desk until Saturday but it has worked well for me in the past. Perhaps Alan can chime in before then.

You can use google for HTS schedule for importing armor and parts . . . We used it on a number of vehicles. Too old for gas guzzler tax anyway.

Update from OP :

Just received my (conditional) approval from the ATF. Sent in around Feb 1 approved Mar5 returned to me Mar 12. Only thing of note is that it is conditional on the smoke dischargers being de-milled. The dealer has told me that they have already been removed so this should be no issue.

Now to setup shipping.
