RORO shipping help for new FV-432

I had not even thought about rail transport. But in any case the quotes seem to be coming in pretty decent - about $5000 or so tacoma including the customs broker fee and that's about what I budgetted - so ok there. Course if the strait of hormuz gets closed off in the next few months while I am waiting I'm sure I will be screwed :)
the boats that have been sold by GL is enough to bring Iran to its knees.

On the off chance anyone is interested - one of the other units I looked at is pretty near the Southhampton docs, was in storage quite a while so has low miles/hours etc. It's an FV-436 instead of a 432 - but I think is in good shape and quite a bit cheaper than the one I got above, but not thru a dealer so more risk - but the guy selling it seems to be a pretty standup guy. I think you could get this one delivered to the east coast for about 14,000 USD give or take a thousand or two.

Don't know the seller other than thru email, so no horse in this race in any way, and have no responsibility for any deals that go bad, just thought people might want to look at the runnerup as it is still for sale and as the Brits say, a nice piece of kit LOL - PM me for contact info.

Southampton to the USA doesn't require the trip through the Straight of Hormuz :roll:

Love you guys, you need to study the map of the world a bit more ! The ship would be going the other way round the world if it had to go through the straits of Hormuz, at least you could have it landed on your West Coast then !

So do you! The Straight in question leads to a dead end unless you want to go to the West Coast of Iran!

OP here - I'm guessing the Hormuz post was in regards to the price of oil skyrocketing and maybe shipping coming to a halt. Which is something I have thought about but ...

As an update - My form 6 is at the BATFE and the export license has been applied for. I also have a shipper lined up - I got a quote as low as $3000 but that was from some guy who seemed to do a lot of Nigeria shipping so wasnt that interested in saving money. Most of the quotes came in about $4500 and up (sometimes way up) and I picked an outfit that had a price for the customs and so forth and had lots of info in their quote - lots of links and online booking tracking etc so I figured they not the cheapest but very close and a good bet. Final shipping cost should be about $5000 including customs on this side.

NS Coyote will send a PM - you should have PM'd me - I just came here as an afterthought tonight or it could have been weeks (or never ) for me to see your post.

It appears that I am the new owner of an FV-432 - now to get it over here.
It's near Liverpool in the UK - would like to know if anyone can recommend a cheap RORO shipper from the UK to the USA ?
I brought my vehicle from Sweden to Galveston via RO-RO. It pays to shop around and get quotes from LOTS of logistics companies. In my case, they were all quoting rates for transport by the same vessel, operated by Wallenius Wilhemsen. But the quotes varied by up to 30%! (Wallenius supposedly has their own logistics company that quotes, but I could never get them to respond to quote requests. I would not recommend contracting with them.) Use a responsive logistics broker that acts like they WANT your business. They have to be responsive to you and your customs broker, later, when the boat is on the water with your vehicle. They need to get manifests and other documentation to your broker after the ship leaves port.

By far the best shipping quotes all came from the logistics companies in the country of origin (Sweden in my case). US quotes for shipping were all at the high end of the range. I'm guessing you'll get the best quotes from small or modest size UK logistics companies. Start with Ascope Shipping Services UK and Giant Logistics Ltd., but be sure to get quotes from as many as you can.

On your end, find a good, small or medium sized customs broker located near the port of Tacoma--- make sure they have handled RO-RO arrivals and clearances at that port --- and definitely ask if they have handled MVs before. You may not find one that has, but if you do, I bet it would make things much easier than one that is just used to importing used BMW or Mercedes sedans. I for one, would be willing to pay a lot more for a broker that has cleared MV's before than for one that hasn't.
While you can go with lowest quote for the shipping, DO NOT go with the lowest quote on Customs Brokerage ! A good customs broker is worth double the cost of a crappy one, easy.

I did actually get many many quotes, I'd say several dozen and you are correct in all you said. The quotes were all over the map, some guy from some nigerian shipping company was the cheapest ($ 3000) and I dont remember what the most expensive was, probably over $9000.

For now I have picked International auto and car shipping – Carship UK » Trans Global Logistics UK Limited for shipping they gave me a quote of $4650 with another $350 for ther customs broker who they usually deal with. I have contacted the customs people and they seem to know what they are doing.

These guys were not the absolute cheapest, but they have online booking and sent me lots of info about all the different steps involved in the process so I felt they were the most comprehensive and prepared. I also have a couple of other backups in the same price range if these guys dont work out. 26 days sailing time when they put the unit on the ship so it's going to be months more before this unit makes it here (knock on wood).

Will they be delivering the vehicle to you, or are you planning to pick it up at the port? If you're planning to pick it up, that's another area where it pays to have an experienced hand. You need a person with a TWIC (Transportation Worker ID Credential) to get into the port terminal. Each terminal has their own guidelines and rules about TWIC.

And there are plenty of people with their hands out expecting cash at each and every step.
Example: Port of Galveston where my vehicle arrived has a non-advertised requirement that everyone on site has to have a reflective safety vest. So, naturally lots of people show up without one, and there is a guy there just outside the gate selling them for $25 a throw. A good escort service will know all that stuff and be prepared for it.
The pickup process can take forever too --- can be all day if, for example, they only let 1 vehicle recovery be going on at any one time in the Lot, and you're way back in line. So, depending on how you value your own time, you may want to leave this step up to someone else.

I was thinking of getting a MV from the UK that would fit in a container, would that be a significant extra cost. I would prefer that over RORO because of some of the extra gear it had.

Yes, a container is much more expensive. You pay by the cubic foot of space, so with a container, you may be paying for all the extra headroom above your vehicle. There are also additional loading/unloading fees associated with getting your vehicle in the container and then getting the container on the ship.
For my vehicle, the cost of shipping in a 20' container would have been about double the RORO cost.
