8. Now place the assy in the upright to remove the compressor housing
...Im thinking i might want to rebuild my turbo now too...mine is only a few months older then yours according to the date stamped on the intake housing and my Exhaust side looks nothing like this...mine fins and inside the housing are completely coated with soot...might do it some good to clean 'er out and rebuild it so it will last a few more years [thumbzup]

My whistler rebuild starts today!

Outstanding Steve, do let us know how the rebuild goes. I attempted to remove my non-whistler off my '68 M35A2 to no avail. I heated the nut and nothing. I'll have to try after a few soakings with PB Blaster next. I really want to avoid a "How To" thread on how to remove broken studs from your exhaust manifold[thumbzup]
I got my rebuild kit from UPS today!! I commandeered the coffee table and I am going to work on it, following your directions. I am using Qtips and turpentine to clean it. Wife unit is looking at me funny. I am taking pics along the way...

All done!

You were right Cougar! Very quick and easy! It took longer to clean everything than the actual replacing of parts! It actually takes longer to swap the turbo out on the Deuce then it takes to clean and rebuild it. I would upload some pix, but why bother...yours are better anyway! Thank you again for the step by step instructions...could not have done it with out you!

Now to rebuild the other two turbos!!!!! This is FUN!

This thread is so full of win. I now know exactly what I'm going to do with the whistler turbo on my parts truck.

Sorry, not interested in rebuilding turbos. Just did this project for fun and then sold the turbo. The new owner loves it and sounds just like he wanted.

is it possible to just buy the oil seals? the D turbo on my LDS-465 1A leaks oil in the intake and smokes a lot which it may be leaking on the exhaust side too. just a thought if i just needed those seals and gaskets or if i should just get the whole kit. Thanks!

I am not positive, but I think you have to get the whole kit. Might as well replace the bearings while you are in there replacing the seals. I have about 50 miles on my rebuilt whistler and I could not be happier!

Was a D kit listed? The D cannot use the C kit.

no it was not. i just dont know if i could buy just the seals and go that route if everything else on my turbo was in good shape. maybe this could pertain to the C turbo also. i know the kits are not the same, but if somebody had a turbo leaking oil like mine, it would be nice to know if just the seals are available for the multifuel turbos as well. after reading this thread, it makes me want to rebuild mine for the fun of it. just what i need, another project

Yes a little play is normal. If not it would seize when it heated up. Oil pressure also floats the shaft so it does not contact the bearing.

just an update on my turbo, i had a professional turbo guy look at mine. i have a little play on my turbo shaft and he said it feels fine. he said he could not get the bushing or bearings for my turbo (which is a 3LM) but he could get the seals. i dont know the part number though. at least if somebody has a 3LM turbo like mine, at least they should know they could get seals. well thats that the guy told me anyway. bushings/bearings have been discontinued according to him.

I have one that I brought home From Iraq in 03 as a souvenir from a truck that saved my Bacon. Now I have two that I pulled off a bomb range that are in need of MAJOR TLC. how do you know if they are in need of being rebuilt? Mine spins, and doesn't scrape on the fins, but it's been sitting on my work bench in the Garage since o4...;)

Bump for a great thread; this is my next project (not by choice...).

Hmm, I've been looking around and it looks like no rebuild kit for the D turbos? If anyone knows otherwise, let me know.

I do have a "C" to be rebuilt, and have that kit already. But I was hoping to rebuild my leaking D as well.
