M43 Coil and Resistor

The 43 has the 24 volt system and it was running perfect.

Ignition started breaking up which made it appear as timing. After upon further inspection and checking the no spark issue I started on the distributor.

Hot leading in existed. Hot to the positive side of the coil was non-existant.
It does have a Pertronix Elec Ign installed so I pulled the plate to make sure I did not pinch the hot lead on install - it was not.

Pulled the coil (24v) Part #8712400 which clearly states it need the wafer resistor that is seperate on the bottom. Tested the lead hot going in and it existed - tested for hot coming out - it was not there. Bakeolite coil is also cracked down the side.

Pertronix is only compatable with a resisted type coil - any ideas on a replacement if they are internally resisted or do I need to replace like for like.

Chatted with Gimp before all this started this morning with the testing - I was going to bother you while you were welding - but all you would have told me was you knew were two M37's are. AMazing how folks think alike.

Squirttruck was on the sidelines as well passing info and he has never seen one like this - and dang he is an ole fella too boot.

Looks like a search and resuce mission now.:jumpin:

But I just love it when the heat gets turned up - the clouds darken and lesser men run away crying like babies.

Ole Zout loves a mission and the thicker the plot gets the more excited and entrenched he gets - it will not be over till its over.
I am no doubt surrounded and overcome with a deepening crisis BUT

Some folks use to call this a "walk in the park".

We shall prevail

A resistor is a resistor, you could use a civie type and mount it outside the dist but you need to find one with correct ohm/resistence as the stock one. Or you can just buy a newer style military 24v coil that has a internal resistor which superceded the older 2 piece coil.

Thanks Bill - the biggest objective with this Pertronix Elec Ign system is that it has to be a resistor system - if the new ones are internal it is a final countdown.

Oh I did not miss the lick about swapping out 43's .

But I am glad Bear knawed the belt holding me in the seat when ya fellas tipped me over in the mule and I was laying horizontal a week ago - all the rest of you guys were laughing too hard. Was also hard to finish my beer laying on my side.

FWIW - Called John up at Midwest Military who has taken care of me on nearly all the parts for the jeeps and the 43 when I have needed to order them - if you have not dealt with him - he is a great vendor to deal with - THX JOHN.

The distributor in the 43 is an old style he stated and only the like for like coil and wafer resistor has to go back in it - the distributor housing is not tall enough to fit the newer style non resistor coils.

SO I had several issues to decide - throw away the electronic ign I just installed that requires to be resistor style - or buy a newer style distributor housing and update to the newer taller coil pac.

Kept the old style and John has them ordered up for me today - wafer resistor and coil. should have it running by next weekend.:driver:

I'll say it once again the newer style coils have internal resisters!

Not to argue with John ( did that once and lost ) but the two ( old and new style ) coils "Should" be the same height (w/ old coil stacked on top of resistor ) but anyway you found the old style coil/resistor so problem solved.

Thanks Bill - you did not have my doubt on your first post. I had seen something like this on another site and went looking for the thread but never found it - and I knew we had smarter fellas here anyhow.

I pulled the cap off Debs today just to peek at the coil (thoughts raced through my head of swiping it - but wisdom prevailed).

Jim - once this baby is put back together I do not think you could pry it out of my dead hands - I bet this baby is going to work sweet and maintenance free.

If I were going to drive this more than what I plan to I might consider just changing it all over - guess time will tell.

NOS coil and resistor wafer showed up at 5:30 this afternoon - ran down to the garage with box in hand and started installing them - got to the lead hot from the filter to the wafer and wacko - the hot wire pulled out slicker than butter - so I yanked the whole dist and stuck er on the bench.

Soldered and shrink tubed the connections - stucker er back in and she is a sputtering so timing is close. It was about 7 O dark thirty and could not see anything anymore - so I will finish this up tomorrow night with 4 grandsons running around me.

Pulled the elec ign and sent it off to Jim Henderson up in Wyoming.

Went back to points system and after a set back of pulling a wire out of the new resistor and John sending me off a replacement - got it fired back up right away after dropping the dist in.

Still had it advanced as far as it would go and still had a skip to it.

Re-set #1 on 5 degree's BTC and with the dist in and a little loose dropped the oil pump and turned one tooth forward - putting #1 on Tdc

Tightened all back up - set the cap - rolled it over and it ran as smooth as a baby's butt.

Took a couple spins around the neighborhood and terrorized them as best I could.

My friend sent me up a replacement light switch and I will start that tomorrow and getting the pintle hitch off it and touching up paint on the rear door area's.
And Away We GO:jumpin::jumpin::jumpin::jumpin:

I'm super glad she's purring again![thumbzup]

I hope that light switch is good, if not let me know and I will "transfer accountability" of Doc's switch on his M42.
I know his works...but he doesn't:roll:

Good ole Murphy.

light switch in - no lights with switch on. Ran the wire schematic and back tracked the wire to the turn signal relay box - one wire end loop connection had broken off and do not ask me how as nothing has been on that side of the cab.

Repaired connection and have lights -one bulb burned out and will order that tomorrow.
Pulled down the drivers side window regulator and the crank handle just spins - will get the regulator ordered up tomorrow as well.
Ordered a couple cans of touch up paint from Rapco today to get the rear doors touched up where some knucklehead put tooooooo much white that shows through the door openings.

Im going through this right now (how I found this thread). The new coil I purchased for my M38A1 is taller than the original and won't allow the dist to properly close.
