Questions about my truck

Some things that I've noticed about the truck: It grinds gears often, it fully pops out of 3rd gear unless I hold it down with a lot of force and it has loose steering. Easy fixes? My guess is the transmission is going, I don't know about the loose steering.

Sounds like the tranny is gone.......There are plenty of good takeout trannys around for a few hundred bucks.

As far as your steering...how loose are you talking about. A little play is to be expected.

Also, try the search function, most of your questions have already been asked before and can usually be found by doing a search.

Check the drag link on the steering first and then the tie rod ends.

You will need a helper (Soldier 'B' in the Technical Manuals) to do this.

Have your helper rock the steering wheel back and forth and see how much lpay there is in each joint. If you can move the wheel and the arm on the steering box does not move then that is the problem. Eqach joint in the steering should have minimal play.

the 3rd synco died in the trans, not that big a deal either just replace the 2nd/3rd synco set, or when the trans is open for the syncos anyway, just do a trans rebuild, these trans are fairly easy to work on

Where can you purchase the 2nd/3rd set and will that fix the gear grinding or only stop it from popping out of 3rd?

Did you get the truck down to FL?
Hey dale, the truck will be delivered here (FL) on Monday April 2nd.

Only thing I can say about the steering is get somebody to turn the wheel back and forth while you look at the steering components for loose joints and such. I will say that if it's a gearbox, they are a real pain to replace.

I don't know much about the steering boxes on these trucks but is there a way to tighten them up like on some cars with the set screw?
