Spin on oil filter kit

I am only joining this thread to post corrections to a previous poster's comments. It was Hercules engine co. who created the spin-ons for Oliver Tractor and White Tractor co. They spec'd the Wix 51458 filter, with a flow rate of 11-13 GPM, which is over the design of the Multifuel Oil pump at even 2600 RPM. Thank you, John Tennis

I can't tell from that drawing, does oil go up through the center of the filter and back down the outside or is it the other way around?

The standard method is for the oil to fill up the canister on the outside of the filter, and to flow through the filter paper to the inside.

The MF's filter block has an oil gallery that feeds the outside of both cans, and the inside of the filter both filters flows on to the various oil galleries in the block. Both canisters are sharing the flow 50/50.

I had thought certain that I got the 9-11GPM rating from you, but I was mistaken. I guess it is up to westfolk to explain where the 9-11GPM number came from in his post.

Looking back in some earlier posts, I find the 9-11GPM rating is for a small can filter that fits Westfolk's adapters. JT's adapter takes the 11-13GPM WIX 51458.

A valid point though is that JT's adapter, with its 7/8-16TPI thread, only takes one style of spin-on cartridge, the WIX 51458. There are equivalents in a few different vendors stocks, but all were aimed only at old (1960's-70's) engines, such as those used by Oliver/White in their tractors. I don't see any newer engines using that filter.

The slightly smaller 13/16-16TPI thread used in Westfolk's adapter handles a much wider range of filter styles, and applications... even the very cheap 9-11 GPM filter that Westfolk uses for his own deuce. That you can use the cheaper 9-11GPM filter on Westfolk's adapter doesn't mean that is all you can use. There are much larger cans available too.

I tend to think of Continental, Hercules, and White as the same company. There was a tremendous amount of inbreeding between Continental, Oliver, Hercules and White over the years. I cannot remember all of the permutations.

The flow rating of 9-11GPM comes from my 2nd design. The flow rating of 11-13GPM is JT's filter. The 12-16GPM is from my 3rd design. Keep in mind that rating is the MAX. flow rate. It doesn't mean that the flow rate has to be within that range.

I have built 3 different adapter kits. The first was made years ago and used a NAPA#1971 filter. It cost a lot to make and was only ever used on my work trucks. When asked if I could make one cheaper to sell...I said yes. That is my 2nd design which is what most people know. Affordable, does the job, and allows the use of many different filters.
Then I was approached to build a very large quanitity of spin-on kits. Among many other matters in the deal I was asked if I could change it to use a different line of filters...I said yes.
The new design uses a much larger fitting that gives a greater through flow capability as well as a greater shoulder surface area where it contacts the adapter plate. I am almost out of the 2nd design kits. Then the 3rd will come out. For your viewing I'll paste the data for the 29 filters that fit the new kit. Of them 16 are large in physical size. 20 are anti-drainback. Most are 12-16GPM. These are all NAPA numbers. NAPA filters are WIX filters.

NOTE: It won't paste and be lined up like it should, but I think you can figure it out.

1789 the best bet, and 1825 second best due to micron rating and filter cost.

Wish there was a filter availble in a smaller micron rating like the first two on the list, but with a larger can size and better avalibility. but regardless of manufacturer sounds like no one has had any negatives with the conversion.

I'm using Westfolk's second version (Mod 1 all steel). No problems at all. I use the smaller, anti drain back filters. I change filters every quarter (adding oil as needed) and change oil once a year. I get the filters on sale at Napa or on base for less than 3 bucks each. I also have his fuel filter spin on kits as well. Completely and totally satisfied.

JATONKA 100% spin on filters for my entire truck. 100% satisfied.
Well, I have to humble myself and step-up and admit to the making the switch!

However, unlike the Great CARNAC, I went the 50:50 route. 50% JATONKA and 50% WESTFOLK!

I communicated with both John and Joseph and found them both to be such upstanding and outstanding individuals, I decided to give them each my business.

My truck is now completely "spin-on" equipped with products from these two fine SS members. :mrgreen:

I haven't purchased any yet due to cash-o-la. I dont even know the prices between Westfolks and Jankotas.

What I do know is both members make parts that people want to buy. Debate all you want, it's like ford or Chevy (I'm a Chevy man myself).

The how to videos on utube from both are helpful and insightful.

I know one evening i came across jankotas videos on the web. I emailed him thru utube and he replied to me that evening. We had emails going back n fourth most of the evening.

That's pretty cool to be new to all this and have communications and info as readily as it was.

Just to be clear, I am not saying that Westfolk doesn't do similar to people. I can only speak of the experience i had.

I have my own little machine shop and i can make the plates pretty easy. My weakness is turning the threaded nipple due to some tooling and experience.

I am sure there are many others like me.

It would be nice if we can just buy the threaded nipples. Even if you made a profit from just the nipples, we would be able to save our selves a nice bit of cash. Who knows, your volume of sales may increase a lot.

Just my thoughts....

I never knew JT had any videos. I know mine are out there. What's the link?

As for the fittings(nipples), I do sell just them. I have sold hundreds of them to guys that can make the plates.
