I have read that it can lead to cracking the transfer case do to the torque applied to the transfer case. I am sure other can post up with more infomation abut that problem !!!

Yep... the reverse gear is a granny gear and if you aren't careful you can break the transfer case with the extra torque with the R/low gear combo.

Yes but...

This is true and there are folks on here that have broken cases but... I have a different story.

The specific condition that breaks the case housing is shock load. I have pulled trees down, recovered stuck tractors and drug a 40K gradall in reverse in low range with no drama. You simply can't shock the system. An example of this is driving forward in low range and shifting into reverse while still moving forward. The 11:1 ratio is very unforgiving. A steady pull that you ease into is fine.

Remember, all of the rules for these trucks were written for 18 y/o studs with a heavy foot and narrow attention span.

The gradall I pulled was set into the ground and I had all 6 tires on the M925 making ruts while it was breaking the gradall free.

Just found this pic online to illustrate why you don't want to use Lo in Reverse. Described as "does not run".Site rules state I cannot tell you where/when this truck is due to the circumstances for which the pic is posted. Apparently done in the yard as that cloth looks fresh and the fluid has not turned white from moisture.
