M916 Winch Repair

The winch on my M916 does not work and currently has no wire rope on it. I got some wire rope not too long ago, but now I need to get the winch working correctly. This is my first foray into hydraulics, so I'm flying pretty blind here.

The winch is a DP Winch model 45. (45,000 lbs rating) It is a hydraulic planetary winch. The hydraulic tank has two sight glasses, one above the other on the driver's side of the tank. The bottom sight glass shows fluid and the top one shows the fluid level about halfway across the glass, depending on the temperature outside.

When I engage the PTO, I think I can hear it making noise. When I move the winch control levers, the winch itself makes noise, but nothing happens to the drum. All of the dataplates on the winch are missing as well, so I'm not sure what each control should do. The winch drum can freewheel. I'm not certain, but I don't think it should be able to do this. The TMs that I've looked at so far haven't really been too helpful in troubleshooting this problem.

Anybody else ever messed with one of these winches before or have any general hydraulic troubleshooting tips?

I'm not familiar with the winch on that truck, but the -10TM seems pretty clear to me.

I'll post it here, in case it helps.

No black button when you are ALLISON equipped

Sounds like something deep inside the winch is stripped out. Drum should spin when the levers are moved and sound is coming from the winch.

Thanks for the help, guys. Does anybody else's winch drum spin freely like mine does?

It looks like it shouldn't spin freely - From the -10 TM - "The winch has a fail-safe spring-loaded brake
which will automatically set any time the winch control valve is in neutral or in case
of power failure (hydraulic pressure drops to less than 200 psi)."

Sorry about that.
No worries. This truck is an oddball in that it is a 916, but has a 916A3 transmission. There is not an all inclusive TM for it, but between the 916 and 916A3 TMs, I have been able to figure out most of what I need to find.

Mine has the cat trans & the winch drum WILL NOT free wheel.
