Well, as Pawnshop said, we went to the Burnet Airshow yesterday. It's about a 35-40 mile drive from my place. All went well, and the airshow folks asked me to haul the little lady who was to sing the National Anthem out front of the crowd to open the show, which I happily did. And she sang the Anthem beautifully, the way it was written, no flourishes, which was refreshing.

After the show, we headed home. Fortunately for me, I was convoying with Pawnshop, Reloader64, and jeepJeep. We stopped in Bertram and I downshifted to second gear and found out I was stuck there! Second with clutch in, second with clutch out, that's it. Drove into a parking lot, in second, and used "manual reverse" (the above mentioned buddies) to back into a parking place. They grunted a bit, but I thought things went well. I'da helped push, of course, but someone had to hold the clutch in and steer! :twisted:

On taking the cover off the tranny, we found that one of the shifter yokes had lost its locking clip and jumped its shaft, thus locking the gears in place. The brass bushing in it was pretty trashed too (no doubt the source of my previous shifting issues).

Reloader's place was about 20 miles away, so we headed over there. He machined a new bushing from brass stock, we installed that and put the linkage back together and drove on. After the repair, the V actually shifted better than it ever has before.

I'm now pretty sure this is actually the part B3.3T previously talked about needing to be tight, I had thought he was referring to a different part.

So all is well, we made it home fine, though many hours later than planned. It's good to have such great friends! I owe some dinners.

Judging by Pawnshop's second photo, my supervisory skills are still sharp! Looking a bit like Hank Hill though...

The yoke in question is the reddish one near the top right of Pawnshop's first picture. In the picture, I am actually tightening the parking brake linkage, which was also coming loose. :?

Mark, I'm not going to make Mabry this time since I am the weekend supervisor at work, I'm saving my vacation time for Temple. I promise you can get in it there though. I'll even give you a ride!

Glad you got it handled. That is the bell crank I was referring to. You should be good to go on shifting. Let me know when you want to do the carb swap. I have a Holley all set up I can make you a deal.

I missed the Burnet airshow, I was tied up at Lynn's.

I am sorry you cant make it to Mabry next weekend. Your company will be missed. We look forward to seeing you at the Temple Airshow.

Rory made the repair sound very casual. What he didn't mention was the 3 trips back to my shop for additional fitting and machining, mostly caused by my lack of measuring, and failure to bring tools from the shop to the vehicle. We stopped for dinner about 1700. After preliminary investigation, eating, and the abovementioned trips to my shop, we got the V in it's hangar safe and sound, at which point I drove to my house, about 10 miles away. I walked in the door at 0400 Sunday morning. Rory was probably 30-45 minutes later getting to his house. But we got it home, and now we know how to fix a LOT of sloppiness in his shift linkage.:)

Well, I thought you sounded all nice and professional in MY way of saying it! Tawdry details make boring reading. :)

In your defense, working tired makes for easy mistakes, like machining the bushing hole to the clip slot spec rather than the shaft spec.
Better too small the first time and having to drill it bigger than......

If we are giving up times- I departed my house at 0500 Saturday morning to get the V and go to the show. I walked back in at something like 0510 Sunday (I had stopped and left a note for Sarge before leaving the farm).

Some pictures from the Burnet airshow. Pawnshop had his M1028/M101; Reloader64 had his M35A2; jeepJeep had his M36A3; I had an M1009 and the V. Two other club members brought M-37s.

A lot of the scheduled aircraft didn't show because of weather, and of course Howard Pardue, a regular at this show, lost his life recently in his Bearcat. There were still a bunch of planes, of which I have only included a few.

Amongst the most interesting to me were the half-scale Spitfire (my dad flew the real ones in the RAF in WWII), the SB2C :)drool:), and the Hind-D :)drool::drool:).

Great pics Rory! Well I asked around a little bit and got at least one V series story. Its not a very good one though. The story came from a fellow Marine I work with who was an MP some time ago. He was assigned to a "sensitive site" for security, and his platoon was assigned a couple Dragoon's as rapid reaction vehicles and for overwatch/escort when various sensitive items/payloads were transfered on or off.

Well they had a security breech drill one day so they geared up and bolted out to their vehicles and put the hammer down as fast as they could, knocking over small trees on their way to the trail that they used to go from the garrison to where the breech was. Well the reail was on the side of the hill and had a bit of curve, driverside being lower than the passenger side. As they sped along the driver was buttoned up but the gunner in the turret wasn't.

When the speed and grading met on a curve the V rolled over unfortunitely killing the Marine in the turret. My friend was the gunner in another vehicle when it happened. From then on he would usually yell and attempt to kick the driver a bit when he felt they were going a bit too fast.

I'll try to get him to tell some better ones. I think my boss might have a few more from his time in service as well. His might be a bit more interesting with some combat use.

Guys A little story about the V we were on a convoy in Nam out of Cam Rahn Bay We were going into a Mt. pass the road was all hair ppin turns working our way up. A RPM was fired at us it went overthe top of our V it hit a dirt pile and went off. There wa a jeep behind us it missed it. After the fire fight we check or V and it had scranel marks all over the side and back. The only thing we could say is the armour stopped small arms rounds on the sides. The only place with no marks was the front. We did fire up the hill side. But, the M-73 machine guns that we had keep jamming. It was to long and they were putting 50 on the V s.

My boy just sent me some pictures of his 'workplace'. Most of them, such as their MRAPs and other gear at work, I wont share (sorry) so as not to risk compromising intel. The ones shown are innocuous.

He is generally having a good time, as young men do, though they have suffered casualties already.

Ahh the good old days...hard work in a sh**y place, with bad water and no trees. Well, stumps don't count.:) Semper Fi to your son and thank him for being is the S**t and getting it done. Thanks to him for being there and thanks to you for raising a good man.

Next time around, I'm coming back as a Marine again and I ain't leaving till I hit 30. Wonder what kind of heli lift platforms they'll have then? :beer:
