Well, as Pawnshop said, we went to the Burnet Airshow yesterday. It's about a 35-40 mile drive from my place. All went well, and the airshow folks asked me to haul the little lady who was to sing the National Anthem out front of the crowd to open the show, which I happily did. And she sang the Anthem beautifully, the way it was written, no flourishes, which was refreshing.
After the show, we headed home. Fortunately for me, I was convoying with Pawnshop, Reloader64, and jeepJeep. We stopped in Bertram and I downshifted to second gear and found out I was stuck there! Second with clutch in, second with clutch out, that's it. Drove into a parking lot, in second, and used "manual reverse" (the above mentioned buddies) to back into a parking place. They grunted a bit, but I thought things went well. I'da helped push, of course, but someone had to hold the clutch in and steer!
On taking the cover off the tranny, we found that one of the shifter yokes had lost its locking clip and jumped its shaft, thus locking the gears in place. The brass bushing in it was pretty trashed too (no doubt the source of my previous shifting issues).
Reloader's place was about 20 miles away, so we headed over there. He machined a new bushing from brass stock, we installed that and put the linkage back together and drove on. After the repair, the V actually shifted better than it ever has before.
I'm now pretty sure this is actually the part B3.3T previously talked about needing to be tight, I had thought he was referring to a different part.
So all is well, we made it home fine, though many hours later than planned. It's good to have such great friends! I owe some dinners.
Judging by Pawnshop's second photo, my supervisory skills are still sharp! Looking a bit like Hank Hill though...
