was trying to start my truck and I noticed my gen 2 light wasnt on then the wait light wouldnt go off. then I noticed I wasnt hearing the normal click from the glow plugs. after trying to start the truck its obvious the glow plugs arent working. I read thru a couple threads but didnt see this same issue.

Have you looked up the doghead relay mod? Sounds like your glow plug relay may have failed. Have you checked your battery voltages? Your 2nd battery (the one farther back) may have failed - it should read 24V +/-.

Good luck!

Always start with the basics.

DO NOT attempt any electrical repair/troubleshooting until your batteries are fully charged and loadtested. Don't assume they are. Check them. I have seen batteries die overnight.

If your GEN2 idiot light won't light up, then your rear battery is not charging. The light is part of the alternator excitor circuit and must function for the alternator to be able to work.

Fix the battery issue first and them move on to the glowplugs.

You do have a FREE copy of the tech manuals don't you? If not you can download them from the Tech Manual (TM) Forum

I haven't touched the truck yet. Did a google search and found the site. Did a search here but wasn't sure if the 2people issues were related. Nthn was posted that they were. That's why I asked. I will start with the bat. And go from there. Thanks

A clarification.

Each battery is a 12v unit. When combined in series they will provide 24v.

If you check each battery separately, a fully charged battery should read ~12.7v

Nothing wrong with asking.

The two issues may be related if the battery voltage is below specs.

In a stock system, the GP system uses 12v from the front battery to energize the system. It then uses 24v from both batteries to feed the glowplugs thru the resister pack. When all of the glowplugs and the resistor pack are working correctly, the voltage is droped back down to 12v at the plugs themself.

The voltage starts at 24v and as the plugs and resistor pack heat up, the resistance increases and the voltage drops.

This was a design requirement of the Military so the CUCV could be jump started by other 24v military vehicles.

Since we aren't the military, alot of guys will remove the resistor pack from the equation and rewire the GP system. All it takes is a couple of minutes. It will remove the chance of burning out all of your glowplugs.

Search for Resistor Pack Bypass for the details.
