burned wires again help

installed new relay today and replaced fuseable link that was damaged when relay stuck last weekend, turned key on starter just went whirrrrrrr and then smoke from under dash ..burned red wire and puple wire, would a bad starter do this ? and the fuseable link was very hot also..its 14ga.

Sounds like you have a short to ground somewhere. Trace each wire. Double check your connections. Are you feeding 12v and 24v correctly??? Trying to feed to much current through the wires is what causes this. Either you lack resistance, ie, grounded out, or you have it connected to much of a power draw, ie, connected wrong, or you are feeding it the wrong voltage. You need a cheapo test meter for continuity checks, resistance checks and voltage checks. They are great things when you have one.

Did you replace the starter? Sounds like you need to if you have not already.

thanks guys gonna drop starter today,it was new before relay went bad..was hoping it survived..no luck here..

Did you replace the under-dash starter relay with an original style relay?

I do not recommend that. Starter rum-on is a common issue with CUCVs.

I have posted a thread on how to replace that relay with a different relay that will eliminate/not allow starter run-on.

yes went orig.was in hurry, buried my Mom on Wed. and son is in town on leave for short time Hes a Navy deep sea diver from Hawaii and liked my 1009 ,wish I had become member when I bought it..Now I need a harness ,Any suggestions
