M 816 Crane cable length?

Also has anyone replaced their cable with synthetic cable? I would use the same size to increase the strength/safety, I would like to hear any down sides to this idea.

From a quick research, can not see why not, though there is a BIG difference in synthetic cable, a GOOD cable yes, on the lower end of scale no, I do not see a problem for CRANE cable where chance of cutting/sharp edges is petty slim, for winch work, I would think depends on the type of work and the surface it is being drug over.

Also think the affect the SUN has on some synthetic cable would require a cover when not in use.

I say go for it if you have the MONEY (a lot of)

They require synthetic cable on rock crawlers in competition, so I am sure it will hold up to regular winching but was wondering if there is a downside other than price? Also the price difference on the crane is not so much and the safety factor is so much higher it also looks like it would spool in and out better than steel. If I get a extra couple thousand might would think of changing rear cable to synthetic :screwy:

The thing here is that most time it is NEW each time it is entered ( a one time use) hence cuts and use is not a worry, the everyday winch use would require a bit of caution.

I do not see a problem with crane hoist cable, I would think about sun damage/cover though

Nope sorry Ron but the synthetic line is abrasion resistant better than steel but can be cut, overall it is much safer short or long term use. They even use it on tugboats! Only down side I have found so far is how to terminate the ends.
