Do I really need a spare tire?

Hello All

Do I really need a spare tire on my M109A3 ?

If there is a flat front tire (or two)
I could take one of the four middle tires. A single flat on one of the dual wheels could be ignored.

Now, I know this would double the work of changing the tire, but I would like to mount a second fuel tank.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Yes, you can use one of the outer wheels if you don't want to carry a spare.

The way i see it is the spare is there for the road service truck to install if i have a flat I personaly can not get the lug nuts off even with a long pipe on my 3/4'' breaker bar also I dont cary a jack . put spare in back of truck on long journeys
I want to remove my spare and install a big lockable storage box

If you are referring to the A2's with duals you should know that running a tube type tire flat (duals) can cause the tire to catch fire.

You can single out the rears to get spares for the front.

You still need a spare......if you want a extra fuel tank move your spare to the bed of the truck.

I keep the worn tires in back that I wouldn't trust as steering tires, so I like to keep a good steering tire in the spare tire carrier in case one in front goes. As for extra fuel I just take along jerry cans and a siphon hose when I think I'll need the fuel. Its easy to stand a jerry can on the passenger side cab floor and syphon the fuel into the tank.

I put a secondary tank on my truck (search for it, I did a write up on it with pictures) and that is the way to go for carrying more fuel hands down.

If I get a flat I plan on using one of the 4 spare tires that are always along for the ride on my back axles. I took my spare tire mount from the truck and mounted it under my M105A2 trailer in a very clean manner (again, search) so that I have a spare when I'm running around with the trailer, which is a decent amount of the time.

I think Wreckerman was referring to bigflew who said he planned to ditch the spare on his A3. That would leave bigflew walking it ye had a flat.
Nope, the 109A3 is a multifuel deuce with a box on the back.
the 109A4 is the Cat powered truck with stock singles and a box on the back.

Hello All

Like gimpyrob said, the M109A3 is the M35A2, multifuel, (with a camper box on the back).
So I have dual tires in back. The goal is back country camping and a diesel-WMO mix. The more fuel I can carry, the less I have to buy. It will also extend our back country range. (We carry a bread machine and one kilowatt generator so we do not have to go to town for bread.

I do have a military jack and hopefully I can change a tire.

I will remember to remove a flat from the back (thank you wreckerman)

I also have a M109a3 and putting on 46 inch tires, I discarded my spare tire rack area and installed a additional generator housing with 2) 1200 cca truck batteries for my 120 volt inverter system.
I was planning to install a additional spare 46 inch tire under my M105 trailer- after a failed configuration attempt - took a step back and decided to go back to the drawing board ( I have another M105 with 2 -900 x 20s spares mounted on it ), and I have't seen any information on either builds.
So it got me thinking- what about a rear pull out tire mount- same as on a Jeep or Blazer
bolted and welded to the bumperets- folds out of the way when you need access to the rear door, with a small detachable jib crane configuration to lower and raise the tire when needed- just thinking out loud on this one. :roll:

I had the thought of fabricating a swing away tire carrier on the back of a deuce, but the construction and reinforcement would be a massive undertaking. I built one for a jeep cherokee, and knowing what went into that, I would not attempt one for a deuce because of how beefy it would be.

Recently there were some pictures posted on here of an M109 with a swing DOWN tire carrier on the back of the van, utilizing a hoist cable coming from the top of the van body.

Anything is possible!

You really only need a spare if you have a flat. Other than that, spares are a waste of space.

You guys should look into something like the GMC's have. The spare tire sits on a rotating assembly that folds out for easy removal and installation. No lifting required or dangerous hand winching. It would be really easy to recreate.

I've just been told to be careful lowering an m35 tire with the hand winch as it can get away from you pretty quick. Not speaking from experience here.

Yeah the GMC tire mount is awesome. And twice as many wheel cylinders too. [slipping back quietly into the GMC section now]
