There are a few M48s and M60s in civvy hands. Not many. By the time they were too old for Uncle Sam to want, the demil requirements say they need to be cut up into tiny pieces. The ones in foreign countries are not allowed to come back in. Pending a future change in importation regulations, you won't see any more modern American armor in citizen's hands.

I wonder which is more likely to occur?

While owing a beast like that has a cool factor of 10+ the logistics of moving them and the cost associated with keeping them running (as opposed to having them a lawn ornament) is beyond most small collectors.

That's why there are a lot of private military museums. The costs can be offest and donors can write off contributions to them.

They can be privately owned, the Museum has 2 of them. It takes a 9 axle trailer to move them over the road and a permit . Not only is that a bank roll to do but they don't get very good mileage! They are fun to drive though :beer:
