Smoking Fuel Solenoid / Unknown Harness

OK, I put a new compressor in today, and put everything back the way I found it, I think. But after priming the fuel system the solenoid starts smoking bad when trying to start. I also have a harness that I don't remember unhooking, and in the pics I took I really can't see that it hookked to anything. So.....any idea what the dangling harness is (wire numbers are 996, 997, 998, 999)? ANd mostly.....why is this solenoid, which I did nothing with except take the little wires off and put them back on smoking????

Any ideas?

EDIT: Black compressor is new, Green is the photo before.

The pump is different

Look at your old Pump.

Here's a pic of what you probably used to have(and where the wires go).
Thanks Doghead. Problem is its the same fuel solenoid/pump. I only changed the compressor. I don't even see that sensor where yours is plugged in.

Also, the truck ran perfect two days ago before the compressor change......

Sorry, I deleted that info and rewrote my post, when I noticed your description said compressor was changed (not an assembly).

Did your shutoff solenoid get wet?

Does it get hot?

Does the smoke smell "electrical"

Does it run?

You could manually override it and disconnect, just to run it.

Could be failing insulation, and with you moving the wire harness around, it finally rubbed through and is shorting a little, or at least getting pretty hot. Where is the smoke coming from exactly? The whole solenoid or where the wires go?

I have heard of this, but don't know how to bypass. I have not gotten it to restart after the compressor job. I didn't really "smell" it, had dissipated by the time I got out of the cab.

As best I could tell, it almost seemed like on the engine side, but I was working alone, so hard to tell.

Could be a worn spot in the wiring harness against the block.

I would also turn in the override screw and try to start the truck.

You can take a multimeter and test the solenoid coil. You can also test the harness to see if it is going to ground anywhere it isn't supposed to be.

Good news..

OK, truck is running. I still can't believe how sweet that engine runs. It actually looks like a fresh rebuild. There is brand new paint on the harmonic balncer area without a spot of dirt, but the mounts are not paointed, so it was def painted outside of the frame. Also making air, FINALLY! I have the fuel cutoff solenoid bypassed for now, I think it went bad when off the truck...(?) I'll be looking for one of those now, but at least the manual shutoff works for now. Thanks for the help!

You should be able to get a new shutoff locally or online It's a standard(24v) Cummins part. The part number should be in the forums or in a TM ending in -P. That number is a Cummins number.

Here's one source. http://www.eriksmilitarysurplus.com/fucova24vofo.html

When I replaced mine, the number was 6997324, 24v FUEL SOLENOID, this is a BEPCO product, made by BEPCO inc.

Compressor

Thanks guys for all the input. I have one on its way, although the manual shut down with a return spring works pretty darn nice...

Also, figured out what was wrong with the compressor. This truck had brand new tires and brand new engine installed, and then was written for no air pressure, and released from inventory. Funny thing is the compressor was put together wrong, the crank shaft was running UNDER the connecting rod.......new compressor and everything else is new. Got lucky on this one.......
