Gin Pole

Hey fellow SS members,
I need to fabricate a gin pole for the front of our 5 ton. Intended purpose is to lift a 1,500 lb load. What size pipe and wall thickness is advised? I plan to modify tow bar feet to mount to the bumper. Not really sure how long the legs will need to be, maybe 12 - 15'. I can truss the legs for addition strength. Don't plan on using the 5 tons winch, figure a chain fall will be easier. What are your thoughts?

I used 3" 11 Ga wall pipe for the poles. I inserted 1" x 2" bar stock in the ends and pounded the tube to the rect shape and welded. I drilled holes in the bar and bolted to the lifting shackles, another grade 1" 8 bolt joins the top and provides a place to hang the snatch block. I have a 1/2" cable running to the pintle. I routinely pick up 3000 lbs with this setup, using the winch. If you are a half second late mashing the clutch as the hook reaches the pulley, the poles will be pulled over and put two nice intents in your hood. I've done it twice now.

Time to buy a wrecker......I cant answer your exact questions, but bigger is always better in this case. If its worth doing, its worth overdoing.

If you're not going to use the front winch, I'd consider mounting the poles on the back. Depending on how far out you're going to be picking this load, you can overload the front end of even a 5-ton if you hang 1,500lb far enough out. The rear will hold much more weight.

Thank you, great suggestions and info, just what I was looking for! My thoughts are leaning to using a spare set of front bumper shackles welded directly to a 3" tube. If inverted I'll check to see if the shackles will clear under rear the bumperets (sp?).

I need to pull the engine from the halftrack this winter, I'm more comfortable using a chain hoist then the 5 ton's winch for more precise placement.
