Adding driver side fuel tank for duel tanks ?'s

In my Krause miltiary vehicles book it showed the REO tractors with duel fuel tanks. Instead of the normal smale passenger tank or large drivers side tank. It shows 2 of the smaller tanks one on each side.

My nephew would also like to do this to his truck.

What will he need to know abd what parts to set this up ? would he need duel fuel gauges ? what would be the best way plumb it up ? tank to tank ?

We have done this to several trucks for customers, but we use a regular deuce tank with a electric pump to transfer into the main tank. We also installed float gauges to control high and low fuel shutoffs to prevent over flow. This way you only have to have the regular plumbing on the deuce and the extra tank is a "pony" tank that feeds the main tank. Cost with everything usually runs around $500 for everything turn key, but it is a bullet proof design that is safe and practical.

I would set it up using the tank selector valve like most of the tractors have. They sell it at boating stores. They also use a 3 way switch to go between the 2 tank sensors -so they share the same gauge.

On the truck I picked up the guy took old mounts and a tank off another parts deuce. Then took the pioneer rack off and simply mounted. He may of had to drill new holes. He than was planning on tying the two together, I imagine putting a low and high fittings in the side of the tanks. This also makes it possible to not have to mess with the fuel delivery system or the return. Also, you would be able to still read the fuel level in both tanks by tying them together.

P.S. Most modern tractors and semis that run duel tanks typically run this type of setup too!

This is using the regular tanks ? this truck has a fuel tank inetween the passenger step/battery box and the rear tires.

On second thought, Sounds like you got it all figured out so it'll work out great/perfectly. When its time how do I or He go about contacting you for the setup ? passengers side tank is shot it'll need 2 new tanks.

They only have a line on the low side.

Now that i think a little harder this is true. Only 2 of our tractors at the farm i work at have both high and low lines. That's about as simple and proof as I can think of too. One could easily do it in a day.
Two possible bad things could happen if you tie the two tank's together:

1. Damage one tank and both drain.

2. Park sideways on a hill and all the fuel drains to the low side tank, which might not be the one you're pumping from.


Here is my very recent dual tank mod where I have two stock M35 tanks. The driver side pumps into the passenger side at the flip of a switch. An ON-OFF-ON switch let's me use the factory gauge to check the fuel level in either tank. I'm real happy with how this has been working out.

That's true, I guess in the end its a matter of personal preference. The way I see it is if there were common problems with that set up, Case, New Holland, John Deere, Volvo, Eagle, Mack and Freightliner would have found a better way to tie them together. But like I said, to each his own.

I will use the in tank pump on the left tank to transfer previously filtered wmo into the main tank, going through a 5 micron filter with water seperator during transfer.
I used 1/2" rubber fuel line and barbed fittings to plum it all together,but had to customize the fuel pump outlet fitting by using the original flare nut and reflared tubing to adapt to a barbed fitting.
I have not wired this to a switch yet and still deciding weather i want to use a switch to select fuel levels between tanks.
It does seem the danger here with this transfer setup is the switch accidently being turned on or left on and overflowing the main tank, if that happened, where would it go? Probably through the vent line if the pump had enough pressure to push it that far,in any case it might make a mess. A float switch (mentioned in this thread) would solve the problem but the float switch would have to be in the main tank.

Your set-up is almost identical in design to mine. I made the mistake of leaving the transfer pump on one time. It came out around the fuel cap and made a bit of a mess. Not a huge deal and I learned my lesson. My switch to the transfer pump is hot all the time so the few times I leave it running and get out of the truck and turn it off I always catch it because I can hear the pump running on the driver side. You could use a 24V relay to switch it with the ignition some how.

As far as the gauge reading, there is a single wire from the gauge to the sending unit in the passenger side tank. I ran that to one "ON" side of a ON-OFF-ON switch. From the driver side tank sending unit I connected the single wire to the other "ON" side of the switch. The center, or "switched" terminal goes to the gauge. So either "ON" position will tell me the fuel level in one of the tanks and obviously the center "OFF" position sends nothing to the gauge.

To avoid this problem there are shut off valves on each tank.
Those will work if you catch a ripped or broken line in time.

I just imagine a shared line getting torn while I offroad my truck. That's my concern.

The REO don't have an electronic pump, Its a gasoline engines with a tried and true block mounted manual pump. 2 tanks, 2 lines, sending units, and 2 fuel gauges. 2 lines Y'd or T'd into one. Tank 1 hits E shut valve to tank one, Open valve to tank 2. Would that work ? Maybe mount 2 tanks but only use one truck looks eye pleasingly symmetrical, Yet at 5mpg one tank still gets you 350miles ! how far is one really going to drive one of these things ?

How about putting ALL the "how about" "can", "ect". threads in one thread so as the build takes place ALL the info is in ONE spot instead spread over a dozen threads, and again as I said in another thread, why not have nephew do his own posting, sure would be quicker, ect. also what is nephews name

Well I call him Mikie, So I guess any variation of Michael would work, His parents decided to name him after me for some reason. I have mentioned it and he said he would get around to it. Why I asked the questions separately is, I got all of them answered this way. I have used forums myself for assistance on my own collection and I have found if you ask a few different things in the same post. I ended up with 40 replies to 1 question and little to none for the rest. So I have got into the habit of asking separately. As for this project of his I have had all I care of it and told him I was done helping him. If wants to know more he can sign up and ask it himself. I had some time to "stew" over being hung up on so I think its time he goes this alone !

This would be great as a kit (SD is far) with detailed instructions.
