I got the part numbers for the shocks from the TM but how long are the shocks on the CUCV M1009? I am going to order KYB's when I get some $$$. Also, I know there is a known issue with the starters and changing the system to 12 volts is usually looked at as beneficial. What do I need to do there? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

There is no known issue with the starter, its a heavy duty, well engineered component. If your starter is not spinning over fast, its worn out and needs a rebuild, new bushings and brushes. Changing the system to 12V is usually not looked at as beneficial.

Ditto! The weakest link is the relay under the dash, it is advised to do the Doghead starter relay mod. This mod will eliminate a potential future failure which will cost big bucks to fix and several hours. The rest of the system will work as designed if maintained periodically.

Thank you for the helpful response. Is there a kit to do the Doghead relay mod? I assume you are talking about the run on starter issue that burns all the plugs and stuff right?
My brother said he had that happen in The Corps once.

You are thinking about two totally separate issues. The doghead relay mod (named after one of our members) is just replacing the starter relay under the dash with a heavy duty one, there is no kit. It takes about 20 minutes to do the mod. Look at the stickies at the top of the CUCV section of the forum and one of them will be the instructions for the mod.

Burning out the glow plugs is a common problem related to the glow plug resistor mounted on the firewll behind the air filter housing. It is designed to drop the 24 volts down to 12 volts so the glow plugs get the proper voltage to them. The problem exists when you have a glow plug go bad, the resistance of the ststem changes and the remaining plugs now get too much voltage, and progressivly burn out. As each plug burns out, the rest get higher and higher voltage with the fewer good plugs left in the system. Most people simply bypass the resistor and feed 12 volts directly to the glow plug relay.

Buy the shocks from LMC for $19 each and paint them OD. I too would suggest NOT converting to 12 volts either. The electrical system is fine and the starters are built like brick S&%T houses.
