Been lurking here the last two weeks reading up to educate myself for a purchase. Learned a lot in these past 2 weeks. Looked at several trucks but found one 2 hours away and looked at it today and struck a deal. Took the basic tools and items in hopes to bring her home but due to no brakes and a lost title, we just shook hands on it. Owner is going to DMV on Monday to take care of everything and hope to go down next weeks bring her home.

Thanks

Picking up new truck

Well finally ended my search for a Deuce today and shook hands on a deal. Everything works great except the brakes. Owner said they kept adding fluid but when I opened the MC it was drained. Inspected MC and airpack and both were dry, all wheels were dry except the right front drive axle, and it looks like all the fluid has been leaking there. My thoughts to get her home is to disconnect that wheels line at the junction block and plug it and bleed the system. Should I have any concerns doing this?

it is a 1968 With a LD-465-1 non turbo with a very straight body with little rust. It currently has a water tank on it but with plans to bob, it is coming off for scrap. I have seen the different heaters posted on the forum, but this one has one I have not seen. It looks like it was made to fit in the Deuce, so I was wondering if anybody knows what it is. Here are some pics...

What happens when you put pressure to the other wheel cylinders , do they blow when you need to stop hard ? this one has been the pressure relief to the rest . You would be further ahead to have it towed home and do a full brake inspection and repair the known problems. It is obvious the current owner has neglected the brakes . What kind of brake fluid has he been using ? did he mix DOT 3 in with DOT 5 or has he been using DOT 5? Do you have insurance coverage , good chance you will need it .

The brakes are a weak point to start with being they are single circut , it is not a area to cut corners on to try and save a few bucks on a towing bill.

check out erikssurplus.com as he has all the brake parts you need and really fast shipping. i would get rebuild kits at the minimum or get whole new cyls and then rebleed.

WARNING: DO not buy the truck until a title is produced for the truck. No title no deal! You will not be able to register the truck without a legitimate title.

This is exactly why it is still setting down there. This was a handshake deal and he would not accept any money (offered a down to hold) until he got it cleared up with DMV. My sister bought a car that had a "missing" title and ended up being stolen....I learned by her mistake.

Looks like an aftermarket, add on heater.
When you bleed the brakes, bleed the air pack first, then the farthest wheel cyl to the closest.
Looks like re-caps on the front axle, I'd get rid of them real quick if they are.

Just bring a new wheel cylinder with you and according tools. Shouldn't take you an hour to fix the correct way.
Thanks what we are going to do. Ordered 2 wheel cylinders just to have an extra and they will be here Tuesday. Made a adapter tonight for my Motive Pressure Bleeder that I already have from building Sandrails. Ordered a 3" 8 side hub socket today on Amazon....gotta love having a Prime membership, it will be here Tuesday free shipping  Trying to find Dot 5 locally but all I can find is pints. I could order a gallon some where but dont think it would get here in time. Also going to drain the tank and change the filters and start fresh on the fuel.

Congrats on the truck its GOT lots of potential. Everybody here is correct on the brakes, fix it there first if your going to drive it, Brakes are already a weak point on these trucks, dont push them any further! As far as the heater, I join the ranks of NEVER SEEN ONE LIKE that? It looks like its electric, is it possible that somebody had it laying around and decided to wire it in?

If the guy is going to the DMV to get another title, I would go with him. Prior to going, I would confirm the VIN number on the truck, not just on the placard, but also the VIN number stamped on the frame rail. If the VIN on the replacement title matches the placard and the number stamped on the frame, you should be OK if the DMV doesn't show that the truck was sold or stolen.

As far as the brakes go, don't drive the truck until the brakes are guaranteed to work. Assuming that the truck still has DOT 5 in it like it should, make sure you don't mix any other brake fluid with it. You should be able to order a larger quantity of DOT 5 to take with you. Build the pressure bleeder others have talked about. Make sure you know the correct procedure to bleed the brakes or you won't be successful. It is relatively easy to bleed the brakes if performed correctly.

Got the truck home Friday. I met the owner at the DMV and took care of everything, went smooth...10 minutes. I had prepared and brought everything but the kitchen sink, got to the truck at 9am, checked all the fluids, replaced the bad wheel cylinder, power bled the brakes, temped in a remote reservoir to keep an eye on the brakes, replaced the water temp sending unit, changed fuel filters, drained tank, aired up tires, got most of the lights working and hit the road by 1 pm. [thumbzup] Stopped to fill up the tank and put in Lucas injector cleaner and hit I-5 North. Truck was running good and drove great with strong brakes. we had 4 passes to go over and just took it slow and steady, had my son behind me in the Superduty with the flashers on cause the trucks were not working. Each pass the truck got a little stonger and by the 4th one, it was like a totally different truck power wise. I am having some issues with blowby out the vent tube and it seems to be getting better but the first 80 miles it blew out about 2 quarts of oil and the other 100 it was hardly down at all....thinking rusty cylinder walls/stuck rings and may be loosening up. What is normally a 2.5 hour drive took 5.5 hours on a really crappy seat. My son was in the cab and put his knee in the middle of the drivers seat and it collapsed....then seat pad base had been made out of particle board.....

Put all the tools and supplies yesterday and checking the oil it was dark and smelled a little of diesel so after reading I did a FDC bypass and will do the HH orings next. I need to turn the fuel down after the FDC Bypass, according to the pics here the threaded rod should be set to approximately .100 but mine is probably .25 now. Next is to change the oil and filters and drive some more to see what happens.
