How Far Can A M923 Run on Just 4 Batteries?

I have a M923A1 to pick up at Hooks, the generator belts are laying on the cab floor, maybe just laying there or the generator may be locked up? If I put in four new batteries can I make the 200 mile trip home in daylight? How much does the truck depend on the batteries after it is started, I know gauges what else?923.jpg

My Deuce only made it about 15 miles one time when I had a problem with no charging.

YMMV

What else: the solenoid on the PT pump, the solenoid in the protective control box.

If you run the screw on the electric fuel valve in, the engine will keep running with the battery turned off (my 923 does). I don't know about driving with no electrics, such as for brake lights and such, but it appears one can still drive if fuel is still available. I think the auto trans is just air. Legal? NO, not likely without brake lights.

With brake lights and assorted solenoids surly with four fully charged batteries I can drive a pretty good distance with the little draw they would have, and you bet I am going to replace the belts, this is just a what if. I am trying to not have to take my 932 down there to tow bar it home!

You can also put a few solar panels on the roof. I've done this and it works quite well. Should keep you going as far as you need.

The batteries should get you home as long as you run driving lights only. No headlights. One other thing you should know about Hooks' trucks. Since your truck is listed as not running it was most likely handled with a large forklift to move it around. In turn, you may have mild to moderate air line or air dryer damage. I have a M923A2 a few trucks down that was listed in non running condition. Luckily I got to do a preview before pickup. It runs, but its is just like every other truck I have bought out of Hooks. Every one has had air fittings snapped off at the first air tank or at the air dryer. Making the truck un-driveable without repair. I hope your's is not the same, but be prepared.

Have you got any photos of the damage, I want to carry any spare parts I may need with me, I have someone who may be able to do an inspections since I don't plan on picking it up until the 21st. I don't want to burn up more than one day of vacation if possible, wife already doesn't like the hobby so i don't need to fuel the fire!

No, Unfortunately I do not have any pictures. I do know that the problem on mine is that the block with the pop off valve screwed into it right before the first air tank is snapped off. An extractor set and an assortment of pipe nipples should get you out of just about any trouble. Every one of my trucks were broken in different places also. Most were broken at the air dryer. If you can get a preview, that would definitely help you out a lot. I plan to go get my truck on or around the 21st also. If I happen to be there when you are, I will gladly help out.

Bret:
I appreciate the info. Did you end up with a truck with a hard top? I now have two 900 series one with a ragged soft top and one with no top at all! Any sources local for a hard top?

If you can't find one locally Jeff Davis (CSMDavis on here) did have some in Hattisberg, MS. Jeff is a good trooper and will help you out with all kinds of 900 series parts.

Out of the four trucks I have bought here recently, one has a hard top, one a soft top, and two with no tops. I do have several soft tops though. I might have to make another run out to CSMDavis' place again and pick up a few more hard tops if I cant find them locally. I just hate the long drive, all the way down to Mississippi.

I was down at Jeff's place a couple of months ago for some parts for my 932, most of his big stuff went to the crusher, I need to give him a call on a top, I am from North Mississippi, but even from my parents house it is another 5 hours drive to his.
