Before I start, I realize that the TH400 is a bullet proof transmission and works just fine in the M1009. I was wondering has anyone made or heard of someone making the switch to a four speed manual. How'd it work out?

Can't be done, unless he wants to go strictly 2WD or install a divorced T-case behind it (LOTS of work).

Find a 73-87 Chebby truck with an SM465/NP205, and swipe that and the pedals crossmember, and anything else that you might even THINK that you need. Should a 99% bolt-in swap.

use a chevy NV4500 5speed, and you could gain OD, and keep your 4x4...

yupp. Best choice. Isn't cheap, but nothing worth owning is.

Again nv4500 but with 308 gears in your M1009 you could get away with a sm465 4 speed.
