M923A2 VIN question

What chemical can I use to remove the rustproofing and paint on the frame under the wheel well? I have not been able to get through the paint and locate a VIN despite using Goof-Off, and brake cleaner. I used a wire brush and a scouring pad but still haven't lifted a number.

I have to disagree on the serial being where people are stating on the BMY 932A2. I have two lines of numbers stamped in the frame on the left side, neither of them are even close to any of the indicated methods of numbers. My Data plate fits the 23/xxxxx perfectly. If it's on the frame it's certainly somewhere else than right next to the steering box.

Like others with a 939A2 truck, I have been unable to find anything resembling a S/N on the frame rails anywhere. My truck does not appear to have many coats of paint, either.

No numbers on my truck either. I cleaned the whole frame rail and no other numbers

I wonder if the data plate was the only original information and the front left side frame stampings were done when the trucks went thru repaint, rebuild or some type of maintenance procedure where the body with data plate were separated from the frame. It would make sense to stamp the frame so you could make sure the right cab and frame find their way back together. If the truck in question never went thru this type of maintenance then that may be why you don't have the frame stamp. If it was me I would get a new data plate and take the numbers you can make out from the back of the original plate, use them and if they are short a digit I would add an X at the end. I know I will get plenty of people who will say well that's not how it's supposed to be done. This hobby is not an exact science and neither was the military's method if initially assigning serial numbers. Whatever numbers you pick wether it be the ones from the back of the plate or if you put any string of numerals you dream up, when you submit for the sf97 it will come back with the information you submitted. When you go to dmv with the sf97 to register it, the government has certified on the sf97 the year make model and serial number who is anyone to question it.

My bet is the numbers are there. I used a wire brush to clean off my frame and thought I saw some faint numbers but it was iffy. I drove it to the State folks and they used an acid etch (or some chemical to turn the stressed part of the stamping a different color) process to "lift" the serial number. It was there, just couldn't see it... I'm glad it matched the NSN plate because I had already titled it (which was stupid on my part - CARNAC said so and I agree). Good luck.

Jonesal. What type of vehicle do you have? I have been dealing with MVs for years. Never had trouble finding stamped numbers. The part numbers are easily redable that are stamped into the frame.

If anyone on the site has found a stamped vin on a m 923a2 made by BMY. I would like to see it

If so, get it and trott you butt over to the 2013 VIN INFO thread on this very website and that will help validate your number. (and I sit here in amazement that you hadn't done so already).
And I guess this is hidden. Ive searched for it on the main page. Can someone explain where its hidden or provide a link?

Did you ever find a number on your frame that matches your Data plate? Only asking because I also have a BMY M923a2 and have two lines of numbers near the steering box. They are not even close to a the 23/XXXXX number on my data plate. Because my truck came from GL with a AZ DMV issued title, I used that number for my VA title. All my paperwork from GL used the number on the data plate. Like your truck, if it's on the frame then it is somewhere else than right next to the steering box.

Good Luck - Let us know if you ever find and and where. Thanks

I also have a 1990 m923a2 numbers behind steering box do not match data plate. Truck has 3600 miles and from what I can tell shows no signs of body off work or repaint. Truck is in great condition and I purchased from GL out of Southern Nevada.

I have seen ones that I cannot find the serial number in a location other than on the data plate. All the ones with the serial stamped on the frame to the right of the steering box are left to right and are in half inch hand stamped numerals. Others say it has to be there somewhere but if you can clearly see the part numbers on the frame I don't see how the serial can hide.
