Does anyone know what manual explains whhel removal, brake replacement, wheel cylinder replacement and axle seal replacement. I am new to the duece world and would like to freshen up some things, yet need a little help. Thanks.

Just found out the perfect tool similar to the TM for removing the wheels, drum, etc while assembled. Use a pallet jack, works great. Dont know how to add picts or I would. Just jack up with a bottle jack, run the pallet jack under the wheels, remove the hub nuts, adjust height slightly and slide the entire assembly off the vehicle without ever removing a wheel or lug nut from the drum. Very easy and nice.

Be sure to look over the sticky [ brake inspection and warning for the older deuce] at the top of this forum in case the last person in there got it wrong. The brakes are real forward and you should have no problems. The TM will show how to remove the drum cover and adj. the shoes. I just posted on the rear oil seal leak thread that if you remove the two large nuts on the outside of the backing plate bottom and put never-seize on the threads it will help in bottom shoe adj .as if the nut binds on the stud when you go to tighten it then the gap will be off.

The latest issue of Military Vehicles Magazine has an illustrated article on just this subject. If you are a subscriber, it'll be in your mailbox likely sometime this week. Major newstands also carry it...or you can contact the editor via email and he'll likely be willing to send you a sample copy at no cost.

Please don't ask someone to scan and post it on the forum - aside from copyright issues, doing so would tend to make it hard for me to put food on the table.

Best wishes,
David Doyle

Yellobronc yea used those a lot when working with the heavy trucks and made faster time in the shop and did not take two people to do the brake work. Having the right seal installing tool was a must with the drum in the vertical position.
The only problem with this on the deuce is if adjusting the brakes by the TM then you need the drum installed on the spindle and remove the drum/ brake inspection cover so you can see the brake shoes.
I went by the book and found that I was not getting a good lock up. Came back to the shop and jacked up one wheel at a time and tighten down the adjusters top and bottom forward and back one at a time till the shoes were locked then backed off a hair so as not to bind but just barely hear shoes scraping drum. Doing it like the car with drum brakes has given me lock up now.

This is an old thread, but I don't know if the question was ever answered directly. I found TM9-2320-361-20 Chapter 8 and TM9-2320-209-34-2-1 Charper 12 cover everything with the brakes pretty well.

I've read through many of the TM's, I was thinking that there was something special about the thread that was mentioned. I've redone my brakes from the TM, word for word but still have a question. I'm still not sure what the retaining washer is.
