Another New 1008 owner...with a Few questions

I've finally jumped into the age of the diode and relay, all my previous MV's have been older...I bought the M1008 dually that was on Ebay a few weeks ago. I'm going to use it with a gooseneck to transport my DUKW. The DUKW doesn't do well on long trips. I'm only able to comfortably drive at 35 mph and am getting less than 5 mpg...The 1008 arrived Saturday night well after dark. Transport driver called from a parking lot about 1 mile away and told me to come and get it. I told him I didn't have a Soldier B available so he followed me in it. Of course we couldn't get any of the lights to work, it was an interesting trip, for him...Found the switch for the headlights in the daylight and got them to work. Don't have any lights at the back end or on the dash. Any help with this appreciated. Also, the Gen 2 light is on when running and I'm only getting battery voltage with a test meter, bad generator? My Gen 1 light doesn't come on with the key forward but I'm getting 14.5 volts when running so I assume the generator is working, bad bulb? The previous owner got it from GL in 10/2012 and hasn't done anything with it except for 2 new batteries. It still has the GL writing on the window glass and the sticker on the headlight. He just got it titled in Louisiana last month. I got it titled and got a license plate today...I need a new left front fender, fan shroud, front grill, rubber floor mat, and maybe a tailgate. Any good sources for these type of body parts? I've checked the salvage yards but haven't had any luck...I've been reading everything I can here for the last 2 weeks and learning about the idiosyncrasies of these CUCV's. I'm looking for hardcopy manuals for the 20 and 20P, anyone have a spare?..I pressured cleaned I don't know how many years of Alabama clay off it this afternoon. It was 57 degrees and windy. I'll post some pics this weekend, when I finally warm up.

Hopefully I can help with some of this...

dash lights: make sure the switch that says service lights is flipped up, turn the knob for the headlights as it acts as a dimmer. Hopefully that will solve that. If not, check your fuses.

Gen 1: light shouldn't come on after starting, so your right its probably a bad bulb, try cleaning the connections and swapping the bulbs around. Check fuses.

Gen 2: light shouldn't come on after starting, try tightening the belt on the passengerside alternator, if that doesn't work its a bad generator (or at least it was in my case)

parts: www.hillbillywizard.com they are also a vender here.

Trouble shooting sections of the manuals helped me out a lot. if its ruber, replace it, if its electrical, clean it. Hope it helped some and good luck.

The '20 manual' is parts book and has good info and some diagrams, the '34 manual' is service manual. If you are buying hard copy, you'll probably use the '34' more often. Both downloadable for free on this site.

There are a -20 and -34 maintenance manual and a -20P and -34P parts manuals. I've found a 34P and am looking for a 20. The 20 series are for unit level maintenance and the 34 for depot level...I've got a friend in NC the uses a CUCV to tow his DUKW all the time. I'll be mostly on flat ground here in FL although the reason for getting this is we are moving to North FL near Gainesville where there are few swimmable lakes. Time will tell.

DUKW = 35 mph,,,,,,CUCV + DUKW = 30 mph, Priceless
You forgot the part where he's broken down by the side of the road, which pretty much negates that 30MPH.

And what is his average speed when he has killed someone because something in traffic didn't go perfectly and he couldn't stop that much weight in time?

People, it's NOT about how much you can PULL.

I thought a towing capacity rating was about how much can be slowed to a stop in reasonable time.

North Carolina - FINALLY !
Towing capacity is pulling capacity. Properly operating trailer brakes which are adjusted correctly eliminate the need for the towing vehicle to provide the stopping energy. I pull (and stop!) regularly a trailer that weighs twice as much as my truck when the trailer is loaded. It stops straight, it stops true and it stops very predictably. Towing capacity has nothing to do with the braking ability of the towing vehicle to stop a trailer behind it.

A good illustration of this is the Volkswagen commercial where they have their SUV tow a 747. Yes, it can pull it. It could pull a loaded 40' trailer, too.

Does anybody think it would be safe to have a 747 towed @ 30 MPH by that (or any) vehicle?

Does anybody think it would be safe to pull a loaded 40' trailer with an SUV?

But any time towing loads comes up on any vehicle forum, most of the conversation is about how much weight can be pulled, instead of how much can be safely stopped.
