Starter Issue

O.k., new here, thanks for all the great info so far. Had a run away starter. The solinoid was shorted. Replaced it, did the relay mod.
hooked everything back up tried to start then nothing but the doghead solinoid mod under dash click. Confirmed getting 24 volts between red and purple wire. On the starter solinoid there is only one red wire going to post R but nothin' on S is this correct? Thanks.

If I could make a recommendation, put the vehicle name or type in the title, or in the body, and better yet, both. The title will draw in the interest of those familiar with your specific type of vehicle. and the body of your post will confirm it.

The only clue is the doghead mod, so I think I know which vehicle you're talking about, but it will not be clear for most of the readers.

1986 M1008 Starter Solinoid question

Thanks for getting back to me. My M1008 has a starting problem It's a new to me truck worked great after some electrical problems were taken care of. I had a run away starter and traced the problem to the starter solinoid. Replaced new starter solinoid and hooked it up the same way as the old one. Red small wire to R post on relay and big wire on back of starter to 24 volt bus. I found no purple wire under there which is the supply 24 volt wire at the relay under dash. Just wondering if I hooked this up correctly. Thanks!

Post a picture of the relay you used, along with the part number. You may have the wrong relay.

Also look at the Relay upgrade sticky.It has picture of how the wires should be hooked up.

Do you have the old style 27MT direct drive or the new style 28MT gear reduction starter? (fat or skinny).

The small red wire at the starter should be purple. It may have faded to red or it may have been spliced at some point.

Here is a wiring diagram for the starter and the starter relay. The diagrams are available in the appendix of the Tech Manuals.

I have the correct 24 volt solinoid on the starter. Also the key activated relay under the dash is working. I jumpered the purple and red wire just to be sure effectively by passing the relay and still no crank. I have not tested for 24v at the starter solinoid yet.

I just googled "GM starter solenoid". The small wire should be hooked to the "S" terminal of the solenoid. The I or R terminal is for the ignition coil on a gasser engine.

Looked at the wire diagram, thank you! Apparently The purple wire that goes on the S terminal must have come off the original solinoid. The red wire is on the R stud that according to the diagram is correct. I will drop the starter and try to find that purple wire. Again thanks for the help.

The red wire is the large 2ga wire from the batteries.

Your correct. That must mean I hooked this solinoid up wrong. I'll drop it and put that wire on the S stud and try again. Thank you for helping.
