Okay I got it to top dead center on the compression stroke and I verified the timing mark on the bouncer and in the advance unit in the injection pump.

See:

Oh, tapatalk won't let me put the pics where I want. Look below.

So I pull off the fuel shutoff cover and I see that the plunger is stuck in the off position. So I push it back to the run position hit the starter in the engine immediately fired up and went full throttle. I stuffed a sweater in the air intake ( I already had it pulled in preparation for potential event like this). That didn't work so had to reach inside the pump to engage the shutoff rod manually.

So apparently I have it timed right but it's only full throttle.

BTW, that was exciting

Did you screw up and turn the engine or the gear on the hh?

Also are you sure the fuel control rod is snapping back to vertical?

The fuel govener rod will not move freely if the two wired retainer cap screws are over tightened.
Yea had the happen to Ray. With the motor not running the fuel control rod arm should look like it is about the 7 oclock pisition. Now with a little pressure it will go to the 4 oclock but snap back to the 7 oclock when released.

Ok, the final description of what was wrong.

Much thanks to gimpyrobb, squirt truck and doghead. I can not tell the three of you how much I appreciate your help. Much thanks to floridianson, welldigger and rayzer as well. I appreciate the info.

I decided to (based on some advice) to put the HH back in with the scribed tooth just behind the pointer.

I put it all back together and as described in post #21, wouldn't start. I pulled the fuel shut-off side cover off and found the assy. stuck in the off position. Moved it and hit the button, it fired right off and went bananas.

The fuel shut-off lever was sticky, so I pulled it all back apart and after talking to Squirt-Truck I realized what I had done wrong. I had misaligned the shaft. I pulled it all back apart and put it back together, carefully ensuring the shaft would freely rotate in the correct arc. Got the rod attached and clipped and verified the assy. moved freely, returned on it's own and was smooth.

Put it all together and got this:

Final thoughts:

I did everything right, except:

1. I did not take a picture of the scribed tooth before removing the HH, which I should have done. This would have allowed me to reassemble the unit with faith I was correctly timed.

2. I did not have the fuel shut-off lever assy. correctly installed.

Much thanks for everyone's help. Now let's hope that this thing stops brewing it's own oil. I've bypassed the FDC, removed the flame heater, replaced the booster pump seal and now the HH has been resealed with 3 new o-rings.

Sorry to have interrupted your progress and for having the monkeys with me. Thanks for taking the time for us. I loaded in the rain after I got back. Glad you got it going. Makes you feel good don't it? Better than therapy!

Believe me, it was a welcome interruption.

That sounds purdy.
I haven't driven it yet. I gotta change the oil tomorrow and drive it and see how it is. All I've done is heard it start and idle for a few minutes.

Glad you got it back running. Good luck. Hopefully you have found all of the leaks.
If it still leaks, it's gotta' be something bad, since I've done everything.
