M923a2 right rear wheel axle dripping again.

This axle started dripping about a month ago, and Ken suggested that the axle bolts might be loose. He was correct, they were. I tightened them and until now, no drips. I used a breaker bar to tighten them again, but I am worried about tightening them to much and break a bolt. TM9 gives a torque of 60-100 ft. lbs. on axle bolts. I see the gasket in the photo break down, but can not find the part number to order a new gasket. Anyone know this number for our M923a2?

I always put them on dry. RTV tends to compress and allow the bolts to loosen.

I notice that the rear differential, "actually both" have a rear plug, probably for filling the differential with oil. I know most differentials you fill until oil drips out the hole, then screw back in the plug. I guess our Military trucks are the same. I have to research to see what weight oil to refill the differentials, after replacing the axle gasket.

I think I will raise the right wheel off the ground, so the oil will flow to the left side, while I replace the axle gasket, so I will loose less oil.

Max I replaced pinion seal on my 923 and it started leaking again.
When I took vent caps off and run tubing up to fresh air intake axle quit leaking .
The axle was building pressure .

I will give you 2 just pay shipping I can put them I a flat rate envelope so they don't get ripped or bent.
That is a great deal. Thanks... I am going to check out the pressure thing, Ken is talking about first.
Only way I know of sending you money is by check.
I could send you a check, and you could cash it and make sure it is good before you send the gaskets, just let me know what the price is. You could pm me and we can exchange addresses. First though, I want to check out the pressure issue Ken brought up. It sounds like that is what is happening to my axle, because the leak is all around the hub, and not just the bottom of the hub. I think Ken is spot on again. Probably a pressure issue.

Ken, I'll give you a call tomorrow. I can not get a mental picture of what you did. The axle that is leaking is facing the afternoon sun, so the pressure thing sounds plausible. It looks like the grease is escaping from all around the axle hub. None of the other axles are leaking.
The bolts were over 60 ft. lbs. torque.

The sun would not cause a pressure build up to force out fluids. If it is just leaking sitting there it's the gaskets. There are 2 vent caps on each side of the axle they look like half inch round nubs. You can remove the caps and attach rubber hoses to them and run them to your intake stack or another high point on the truck

Or you can remove them, spray lube into them, and blow through them with air.

They are notorious for sticking. They require maintenance(occasional lube/testing).

They are used in several other places too.
