Yup he said one tank is empty is one is overfull. My money is on its outta fuel.

When you change tanks, are there two valves? one for fuel feed to the pump and another for fuel return to the tank.. or how does that work on these?

Does the extra fuel just bypass into the filter housing instead of going all the way back to the tanks?
Someone just posted rebuilding their fuel tank selector valve,IIRC there were quite a few hoses on that thing(6?), so I'm guessing it gets pumped back into whichever tank you have selected. Only one valve.
The metered ether shot fills up the little "cup" at the bottom via a plunger pushing into the canister when you release the fill button the plunger then retracts allowing the ether to enter the line into the manifold, usually about 3cc If I'm not mistaken. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?76086-5-ton-fuel-tank-selector-valve-cleaning-rebuild

Use a dipstick to confirm the tank you think has fuel actually has it. I use a tall dry weed to go through the fill screen.

If it's just operator error on the fuel tank selector valve, that is covered in the -10TM.

That's what I'm leaning towards it being but I'm pretty rusty when it comes to m939s.

I'm just patiently waiting my taxes to come in and a corresponding auction until I have one of my own.

It stopped while he was going down the road (as pointed out by suprman). How could that be the fuel selector valve? My guess is the tank is empty but due to a less than perfect ground on the sending unit, reading it has fuel.

It stopped while going down the road but after he said he switched tanks and drove awhile. I think he only flipped the dash selector not the actual lever that way he'd think he was on other tank but instead run the original tank to a point under the fuel pickup and then stalling out

I don't know about a dash selector. My (83) M817 has only the floor selector valve. I notice the TM above says nothing about a dash selector for the fuel readings.

Isn't the electrical for the gauge part of the floor mount tank selector or did they go to a separate (dash) switch? That sounds like a problem waiting to happen.

The switch and what it does, is also covered in the TM.

No point in posting every page of the TM in the forums.

Members need to read(cover to cover) the -10TM.

Remember, when these trucks were in use, not just any Tom Dick or Harry is allowed to get in them and drive them to get ice cream.

You need to be trained and licensed for them.

Yes, or learn the hard way, like pay for a huge tow-bill when you run out of fuel.

It's called the operators manual for a good reason.

If you want to be the operator, you need to read it.

I cannot accept the fact that members think they do not have time to read a book, no matter how long it is, before operating a truck they do not need.

I can NOT believe that we have FOUR pages and 65 posts on a 931a2 not starting, not getting fuel, there is only so many reasons that can cause this, the fuel system is a VERY SIMPLE system with not a lot of parts. You would think ANYBODY who owns these trucks would be able to at least look from point A, the tank to point B, the IP., that distance is NOT 2 miles away, how hard is it to check EVERYTHING from point A to point B. This can even be done WITHOUT a TM, If someone cannot even do this, why in he11 do they even own the fregin truck.

At some point some of these guys NEED to start TRYING to help themselves, these trucks ARE NOT the space shuttle. I know everything is a learning curve, so with that said why not help yourself to learn by READING THE TM. .The TMs has about every answer to almost any question that can be asked about your truck, then AFTER you learn about your truck then ask for help, things WILL go a lot faster that way with a lot less guessing games.

Spell Check approved of this message.

I'm not going to further hijack this thread with rebuttals to your(Kawgomoo) comments, but I will say I disagree with you on nearly every single comment.

Let's keep on track here folks.

Also, this site has always and will continue to educate members about the TMs and their trucks.

Yes, operator error. I was not aware of the fuel tank switch on the floor. I've driven dual tank trucks before that had a single switch on the dash. I was expecting that switch to change tanks and fuel sending units. The batteries are charging now, I've filled both tanks. I'll prime it and try it tomorrow evening. Thanks for all who tried to help. I've read the 10 TM, but clearly not cover to cover. Sorry to those who feel their time was wasted.

I read the forums for both knowledge and entertainment value and found both in this thread. I just purchased a M923A2 and while it has a single tank I still gleaned a lot of info from the discussion. Asking questions shouldn't be a sin, especially if you've read the TMs. Unfortunately I've read a dozen or more of them and may not have the retention capabilities of other experts so will undoubtedly ask a question in the future that can be found in one that I've read and not fully memorized. I do attempt to search for an answer before asking but will still do the unforgivable on occasion.

Sweet I kind of figured that was the problem. I'm glad it looks like an easy fix. I've had a few old F350s and there was only 1 switch for gauge /fuel. It's an honest mistake.
