MEP-003 charging system modification

I've been fooling with my 003 today, trying to get the DC charging system to work. After testing I think maybe my DCVR and the stator are bad, in other words, my whole DC charging system is junk.

I've priced a DCVR and haven't located a stator yet. It seems this stuff is getting kind of hard to find and when you do it's awfully expensive.

I got to thinking, would it be possible to do away with the factory charging system and rig something up that worked off of the AC system? Seems to me you could just get a small 24v battery charger, run it off of 120v (convenience outlet wire?) , hook it up to the batteries, and you'd be good to go.

Any thoughts on this?

I came up with a similar idea a year or so back. I was going to tap into the convenience wiring internally so the two sockets would still be available.

Details can be found on this post:

I did a wiring diagram on it too, but don't believe I actually posted it. For this unit I ended up pulling the blower wheel & repairing so the charging system is still original.

Storeman probably has any parts required to repair. If not, I may have what you need.

I did a pretty extensive search before I started this thread, I don't know how I missed that one.

I had a stator bad on one unit and I bought a 24volt A/C charger off Ebay. I mounted it under the control box and plugged the 110 plug into the convenient outlet. Has been working perfect for over a year.

Alternatively you could also use two 12 V chargers connected to each battery. I have two Battery Minder 1500's connected to my 12V batteries while the batteries are still connected in series on a power strip to keep batteries topped up and desulfated. As an added benefit using two 12V chargers can handle the charging task better if one battery is discharged or sulfated more than its mate. Works great and Battery Minder approves this configuration. Now if my OEM voltage regulator were to fail all I would need to do is plug the power strip into the convenience outlet.

I found a small 24v charger for $85. Thanks for the info jamawieb. It only puts out 2.5 amps but jamawieb says it keeps the volt gauge in the green.
