injector pump timing fast question mep003a

I am working on it (timing the injector pump) now so i have a fast question. I am going to use the 1/8th drill bit in the side hole of the injector pump to keep it from moving. This is the same pump that was already on it. I have the engine on compresion for cylinder one and the timing mark is on A. Is this the way it needs ro be? Or do i go past the A and need to find a "PC" Mark or somethin else?

The unit runs just does not like to start so I am making sure the timing it not off. I have the timing marker on "A" with cylinder 1 on compression. If this is the correct location for it. I will place a 1/8 th drill bit in the side of the injector pump to make sure it is also in the correct place. If not I will take the pump off and place the bit into it while its off holding it into the correct place while I install it. If its off now it will only be a tooth or so. So is the place I have the engine correct on "A"? and is my thought processe correct?

It should be on PC during the compression stroke. I have changed several pumps without using anything (drill bits, brass wires, etc), you just have to be real careful when putting it on.

I have that info from the tm but I dont understand it. Is what I am doing correct? When it says place the enigne on the "PC" mark does that mean a mark on it should show "PC" like it shows "A" and "B"? Or am I looking for something different?

The flywheel has the mark PC stamped on it, it maybe hard to see.

A and B are used for valve adjustment. PC is for pump timing and it is critical to be dead on it. Use the 1/8" drill bit to ensure the IP parts don't move.

So i got right on the PC mark and the 1/8 th bit went in all the way into the injector pump. It does have a bit of slop (meaning it will still go in if its a bit in front or behind the pc mark) so i am not sure how that would tell me its righ on or a tooth off but it went in no problem. When it was not on the PC mark at all the bit did not go in near as far. So with this way of timing it i would guess its on.

WAIT. The bit goes into the slot cut into the IP gear. When it is seated (before you try to mount the pump) there is very little play if you try to turn the toothed end of the IP. With the bit sunk in the IP, you then install with the pointer in the center of the letters PC. Shouldn't be much slop at all. You may have done what I described, but it didn't sound right.

So the pump has already been installed i was checking to make sure the pump was correctly times. So i placed the Engine on the PC mark and was able to stick a 1/8th into the injector side ports. I say it has play becuase i can turn the engine a small amount so its just off of the dead on PC mark and it still can go in. Its not much but its some. When i move it a bit more the bit wont go all the way in. Did i do this correctly or do i need to take the pump all the way off again and re try it?

you sound like you may be okay if we are speaking the same language. You won't hurt the generator, regardless. Only affects if, and how well, it runs.

So I have a injector pump from a mep I have for parts. Its off the genset. When I place that same bit into the whole on the side of the injector pump I can turn the main pump gear a little giving it some slop. This was what I felt as I described the slop on the one I was timing. Does that make more since?

This is what I am talking about. This is an extra pump. I show in the video the slop. It movies a small amount with the bit in.

I cant post the video but I will try to sent it to you.

You are fine with that much slop. Good to go. If you can't get a full load and your governor is adjusted, you need to get your injectors adjusted. hehehe

Hard starts, smoke, puttering and missing. Check your valve adjustments and then compression.
