Wrecker winch question

My M936A2 has the end of the cable wrapped up between the side of the roller drum(where the end of the cable attaches) and the mechanism that turns the drum. I think I can get the cable out but what holds the end of the cable in the drum itself once I get it out of there?

There is a very large set screw in the drum. There is a hole in the drum so the cable can go in from either end and be held down by the set screw.

GREAT. Thank you. I got the cable out of the jam on the right side of the roller. The end of the cable is all frayed, any suggestions on getting that back in the hole so I can tighten the set screw against it? (I find it amazing that's the only thing that physically holds the cable!!!! MUCHO appreciated sir. What was going to be a 10 minute check of function, naturally gets to be an hours long drama. At least I got the cable unjammed and I replaced the PPV so now I'm not building pressure to 150 and beyond till the tanks blow off.

Wrap it with some tape then cut it off with a little cut off wheel, like a 4.5' grinder.

I was thinking dremel cutting wheel, but that would be underkill I've got a cutoff tool Thanks a bunch. Bob

On my M936 the thread in the drum was stripped hence that's why the cable came out. I had some set screws that had pointed ends so drilled the drum either side of the original hole and used 2 of the new set screws. Figured the pointed ends would drive into the cable and help it stay in!

Also make sure the spring rollers that keep the cable tight to the drum are well lubricated and turn, if the don't you will quickly wear them down flat on the side in contact with the cable.

Also, the level winders are prone to having seized rollers and pulleys due to lack of use, check em out and keep them well lubed and used once a month at the very least.

Thanks Martin. I was preparing myself to strip the head of the 1/4" allen screw. Put a little PB Blaster in there before I started. Think I put my cable in the wrong way as it has a sharp turn to make, Does it start over the drum or under the drum? I'm thinking over, I have it under right now. Going good with all the help though. I don't mind redoing it even in zero temps. Thanks a bunch guys you all made this easy. EDIT: Redid it going over the drum, all good now. Thanks everyone for the help. Steel Soldiers Rock.

The set screw DOES NOT hold the weight, it ONLY holds the cable in the drum, the WARPS on the drum hold the weight, NEVER NEVER NEVER. load the winch up with LESS then THREE wraps on the drum.

My angle grinder took a crap on the second cutting I had to do( had the cable in the wrong hole), dremel with cutting wheel does fine with this cable to my surprise....

I have found that the set screws are to short to hold much pressure on the cable on all of the ones I have worked on, I get longer ones at fastnall. I don't pull on them but it didn't seem to hold the cable at all the way they came, I could pull it out by hand.
