Help Identify Deuce M56782

I located a M35 parked on a dirt road (which turns out to be public - not pvt) and it has been there for over a year and a half. I'm in the process of getting an abandoned title for it - but I'm having issues locating where the vehicle was last registered - since there are no state records showing it was ever registered in my state (or any state for that matter). I'm thinking if I can find the last known military unit that had it - maybe they can tell me when/where it was sold - and I can work from there.

No unit markings on the bumper(s)

Did have M56782 stamped inside - but no other reference - stock numbers. So where was M56782 last stationed??

Government will not be able to help you.

You need to find the vin number on the frame.

Seems odd it has been parked for over a year on a public road without getting towed.

Get all the right info on it to Carnac, and maybe he will come up with something. Not sure if he is still doing that or not.

Don't know about protocall for Utah but most state have a system to impound and auction abandon vehicles on public property. But to trace any previous owners you need to get the V.I.N. off the frame . The truck could have been stolen and dumped there.

M56782 may be the vehicle SN. Don't know if they were called VINs back then. If that is the SN that would make it a late production Studebaker. The number might just be too high. Most of the Studes I've owered started with M3*****

When I read what the OP put up that's what I assumed. M35 6782.

If you have not impounded the truck, how can you apply for an abandoned title? I know it doesn't work that way in Oklahoma

Also it is spelled Deuce and not Duce.

It looks like a towing company has to impound it .

Looks like you got a parts truck unless you meet someone that knows how to work the system to your advantage. I HOPE for your sake that it isn't STOLEN! Maybe someone got tired of fixing it and just dumped it there... Who knows...

I'm assuming (yea I know) that this is not a well traveled road with a lot of people living along it.

There is the slight possibility that it was stolen from a military installation and abandoned when the person who liberated it got cold feet.

When I was at Fort Benning they had them parked all over post using them for mount/dismount and convoy ops training. Since "A" doesn't always talk to "B" one may have gone missing and either not reported or put low on the crime priority list. There are ways to cover up something that has gone missing, even a big green truck. A unit there had two trucks "off the books" in their Motor Pool for years before they finally got discovered during an IG inspection.

You might check with the closest military base near you and see if they have "misplaced" any deuces.

The other possibility is that the owner never had it registered and tagged and when it broke down just decided to abandon it. Some people have more money than sense.

Thanks for the advice - I’m 'almost sure' it isn't stolen - checked the only number I could find on NCIC (M56782) and its not listed. It’s on a dead end dirt road - which after checking county records - verified its public - its just open land that isn't developed yet - so not a lot of traffic and local PD briefed that no one has complained about it - so no harm no foul. I could do the State Tax impound route - and try to purchase it on the back side during the state auction - but of course... tow fee + storage for 90 days (min time before it can be sold off) = too much up front investment. And I’m sure that the tow company will think its sitting on a gold mine and charge full price (160 tow + 15 per day storage + ‘it has to be worth money’). With that said - I have an appt with DMV to talk options - and if in the long run I can't get my hands on it for cheep - well - then it must have not meant to be. But god do I love a challenge. (And thanks for fixing “deuce”)

My M35A1 has serial # M-56515.
It's a 1962 Studebaker-Packard. The serial number is on the right hand side frame rail on these trucks, not on the left.
