well I decided to spend Memorial Day trying to revive a Steel Soldier.
The motor looks pretty bad. At this point I don't think it's worth saving. I have no issue dropping in one liner ans piston. I have worked for cheap ass dirt merchants most of my life as a mechanic and many times had a MAck or a Detroit drop a slug and fix it by just replacing that one. In this case though what bothers me right off the bat is the handful of shratnel that was laying in the #5 Exhaust port. That means it went through the turbo as well. Also the piston is destroyed and there is a huge gap between the piston and cyl wall. To be honest I am not sure what happened here but I suspect it was like this when I bought it. I doubt the few mins I ran it choked off did this much damage although there was no oil on the side of the motor when I bought the truck, not to say he didn't clean it up.
Anyway the head took a good beating and I see what looks like a tiny crack between the valves so at min I am looking at a used head, a piston and liner, full gasket set and I have a broken stud in the turbo and one broken ex manifold bolt.
That adds up to probably 800-1,000 worth of parts alone plus all that metal is floating around in the motor.
Also a word to anyone disassembling one. When you go to pull the pushrods out..BE CAREFUL !! The will sort of "stick" to the tappets and the tappet will come up with it and drop in the side of the motor...ask me how I know. I only lost one and I think I can get it back in with a magnet otherwise the side cover now has to come off. After that happened I lifted each push rod just a little bit and wiggled it under I felt the tappet drop down.
It doesn't matter now since I will scrap the motor now anyway. I am really curious to know what happened ? I may drop the pan anyway. See what the shratnel looks like in the pan.
Also note in the pics...Why Snap on tools are worth the money vs a chinise POS extension.
Also a quick homemade wrench to get the headbolts off the drivers side. No way that cheesy little ocket they sell would loosen these. I bent my bent wrench trying to get them loose but they finally gave.
Also look how bad the ridge is ? And the gap between the cyl and piston ? Did the liner come apart ?? How could a ridge like that happen so fast ?The other cyls are fine.
